Grunge Rock Outfit Unknown Voidz Share Sophomore EP "Deception By My Side"
featuring the Raucous Single “Lack of Everything”
Ontario’s Unknown Voidz, a dynamic and emerging band, was founded by Zan Khan, who brought on board Ryan “Gooby” Goonoo to play drums and Jon Couzelis on bass. Together, this talented trio has carved out a place for themselves in the music scene, previously signed to Spuds Records, and they have since toured extensively across Ontario and into Montreal, QC. In an exciting development for their fans, Unknown Voidz is set to open for the band Being Dead on an upcoming Ontario tour to promote their second EP, Deception By My Side.
Deception By My Side marks a significant milestone for Unknown Voidz, as it is their first studio-recorded EP. The band collaborated with Toronto music scene veterans Keegan Porter and Ty Begley at Metrolab Studios, a partnership that has led to a notable evolution in their sound. Compared to their debut effort, this new EP features songwriting that is more mature and introspective, reflecting the growth of the band as artists. The songs were partially conceived during the challenging times of the COVID lockdowns, infusing the music with themes related to mental health and the struggles of daily life.
The lead single, “Lack of Everything,” stands out as a powerful expression of frustration and realization. The title is a direct reference to the person who inspired the song’s creation. Zan Khan wrote “Lack of Everything” during a period of intense emotional turmoil, coming to terms with the painful truth that he was being taken advantage of by someone who did not offer the same level of empathy or support in return. This raw honesty resonates through the song, making it relatable to anyone who has felt similarly exploited in their relationships.

The collaborative process with producers Keegan Porter and Ty Begley has been a highlight for the band. As Zan shares, “Keegan and Ty are very fun to work with. We wanted to collaborate with people who could see our ideas and the vision we were looking for. They not only understood what we were aiming for but also encouraged us to explore new ideas. Their guidance helped us create an EP that we are all proud of.” This creative partnership allowed Unknown Voidz to transition from their previous recording method, where their self-titled debut EP was captured in a jam space with rented equipment, to the more polished environment of a professional studio. The difference has been significant, providing them with the opportunity to refine their sound and enhance their artistic expression.
The maturity of the songwriting on Deception By My Side speaks to the band’s evolution and willingness to confront personal and societal issues head-on. Each track delves into the complexities of life and mental health, revealing a candid vulnerability that many listeners will find compelling. The EP encapsulates not just the struggles faced during the pandemic but also a broader commentary on the human experience.
As they prepare for their upcoming tour with Being Dead, Unknown Voidz is eager to share their new music with audiences across Ontario. The excitement surrounding their second EP reflects not only their artistic growth but also the anticipation from fans who have followed their journey. The band’s ability to engage with listeners through their honest lyrics and evolving sound sets them apart in the contemporary music landscape.
In summary, Deception By My Side is not just an EP; it is a reflection of the band’s journey through personal challenges and artistic development. With powerful tracks like “Lack of Everything,” Unknown Voidz invites listeners to connect with their experiences while showcasing their evolution as musicians. The upcoming tour promises to bring their new sound to life, offering fans an opportunity to experience the passion and energy that defines Unknown Voidz.
