Growing up to see you getting old
To my grandma who shaped my world : Song Entry
VERSE ONE ****
I've been luckier than most,
Getting to grow up with you both, throughout our years,
Tender hugs and countless tears,
You told me all your stories,
Your dreams and your biggest glories
took a house and made it home,
Always on the other end of the phone,
You were always there no matter what,
CHORUS ****
Because,
You gave me my first haircut,
washed me in a bathtub,
Told me to dream into the stars,
While watching me build and break my heart,
If I could measure love in medals, I value you like gold,
And I'm lucky to be here,
while I'm growing up to see you getting old,
VERSE TWO ****
You believed in me, how did I get so lucky,
to have you as my biggest fan,
and when you hold my hand,
I believe in God's plan,
that you tell me about,
You've been here since my start,
And have the biggest part of my heart,
You've always been there no matter what,
CHORUS ****
Because you gave me my first haircut,
told me I am enough,
Baked us all our favorites,
You're both graceful and fearless,
If I could measure your love in medals,
I've been awarded by the greatest grandma ever,
I am rich with more than gold,
Because I grew up while you were getting old,
VERSE THREE***
It's been twenty-some years later,
I still say that I am your favorite, even now,
You were at my graduations, and I can't imagine any celebrations
with you,
You have seen all I've known, and all I've grown till now,
what am I supposed to do,
when I say I do, without you
CHORUS****
You've always been there no matter what,
my greatest gift has been your love,
Because,
You gave me my first haircut,
showed me to have strength with love,
If I could measure your love in medals,
its the kind that last forever,
even when you're gone,
I want to never let go,
of the memories we hold,
Where I grew up and you grew old,
VERSE FIVE - ENDING CHORUS ****
Now you're laying in a bed, That fills me with dread,
Because I know the end is to come,
There was so much life you lived,
Before I was in it, and that hurts,
I'm a thousand miles away,
I just want you to be okay,
You've always been there,
I am so scared,
To the day where goodbyes are told,
and the unknowns are known,
at least I got to grow up while you grew old,
ENDING VERSE ****
Someday, I will publish your story,
Written from your hometown glories,
Of how loved you are,
Now I pray to the stars, where you hold my heart,
but were now apart,
You were there from the start, cutting my first haircut,
tell me I was enough,
showing me how to be loved,
Giving the best hugs,
And I will forever hold,
onto my memory of you as I get to grow old.
Dedication: If this song doesn't make it clear enough, I was given the pleasure of growing up with my grandma in my life. She is the kindest, gentlest, yet adamant woman! I truly can't believe I will be living part of my life without her. This song is dedicated to her, as we both get older the more capable I have become and the less she has become. However, I was lucky enough to get to grow up while she has growing old. I hope to take her sincerity and thoughtfulness with me even when she is gone from this earth!
