Data reveals the best songs to study to
One of the best ways to get in the zone for studying is by listening to music, but what are the world’s favourite tunes to listen to whilst studying?
New research analysed hundreds of studying and homework playlists on Spotify, to reveal which songs and artists are the most popular with students. From BTS to Billie Eilish, there were plenty of well known superstars that made the cut.
Whether you’re building up to a big exam, writing an essay or just need to get in the zone to focus, it’s all about getting into the zone and one of the best ways to do this is by listening to music!

Here are some of the key findings from the study
🎶 Of the 100,000 songs analysed, lo-fi, instrumental beats came out as the most popular with the number one spot going to ‘Affection’ a lo-fi song by producer Jinsang, which appeared in 53 of the playlists that we analysed, with the song racking up over 66 million plays.
🎵 However, there are still some tracks from mainstream artists in the top 20, including ‘drivers license’ by Olivia Rodrigo, which holds the record for the most Spotify plays in a single day, as well as Indie anthem Sweater Weather.
But who are the artists that appear the most often on Spotify users’ studying playlists? Again, it’s a mixed bag of lesser-known names who have perfected the chilled out, stripped back sound, as well as some more familiar names too.
📻 K-pop boy band BTS came in the top place, which is no surprise considering their phenomenal global following of dedicated teenage fans who are likely to feature the band on their studying playlists.
🎼 Second and third places on the list go to anonymous artists creating music purely for the purposes of studying and relaxing on Spotify: the Einstein Study Music Academy and Sleepy John, a channel composed solely of white noise and weather and nature sounds.
The ideal tempo for studying
Of the 100,000 songs analysed, the average BPM came in as 112. That works out at about one beat every half a second, and in musical terminology would fall in between andante (at a walking pace) and moderato (at a moderate pace).

“Music can be very beneficial for studying, as it allows students to create the right mood, relax and destress, improve focus and reduce boredom over long study sessions. In fact, listening to Mozart has even been suggested to help memorisation.
“The general wisdom is that the best songs for concentrating are atmospheric, ambient sounds. Therefore, it’s no surprise to see lo-fi beats come out on top as the world’s favourite studying songs. On the other hand, some students seem to be able to remain focused listening to popular artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, BTS and Taylor Swift, whilst others may prefer to work in silence to avoid any distractions.
“Although every student’s preferences are unique, we would recommend listening to songs without lyrics which allow you to focus on the task at hand, whilst blocking out any external distractions. The key is background music, keeping the volume at a low level and choosing songs which you don’t have strong feelings about, in order to stay focused and productive during study sessions.”
When we listen to music we usually do not listen and do nothing else, the task we are doing usually informs our music selection. The value of music as a study aid has long been raved about. "Do It Again" the track that would ultimately open the Beach Boys final album on Capitol Records which was released on February 10th 1969 had originally been released as a single in August of 1968. The track was the first of many post-Pet Sounds era throwbacks to the early Beach Boys sound which would become continually more cliched and eventually lead the Beach Boys to the level of self-parody they would eventually succumb to in the 1980s while their closest contemporaries The Beatles nearing the end of their run in 1969 would go on to be viewed as the most influential band of all time. However, the song itself is not bad on its surface, and it opens with a futuristic sounding (for 1969) drumbeat captured by then-Beach Boys engineer Stephen Desper using tape delays on the drums performed by Dennis Wilson and John Guerin. The song has been re-recorded numerous times over the years on various Beach Boys-related projects most notably the 2011 re-recording at Capitol studios featuring the five surviving Beach Boys at the time backed instrumentally by various members of both the Brian Wilson Band and Mike Loves touring "Beach Boys" to promote the then upcoming Beach Boys 50th Anniversary reunion tour in 2012. The hammering and power drill sound at the end of the song was an excerpt from a track called "Workshop" that was to be a part of the uncompleted "SMiLE" album.
