Long Beach, CA Rockers CARSEX are showing growth in their music with fierce new EP “Human Interest”, which takes a deep dive into the current state of our chaotic world. They channel their frustration and angst into 7 pummeling tracks, which makes for one hell of a ride. The EP was produced by Steve Evetts (Sepultura, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Butcher Babies) at Maple Studios in Santa Ana, CA, and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music in New Windsor, NY.

The opener, “Sitting Ducks” is a frenetic, all-out barrage of sound with distorted guitars & a menacing rhythm line that explodes into a supersonic metal/punk mashup. It’s a mix of Henry Rollins/Black Flag, with a bit of Danzig mixed in for good measure. It’s an unrelenting anthem of angst. CARSEX singer Nigel Burk says “Sitting Ducks’ is a kind of “they live” type song. It covers the helplessness and monotony of a modern world and the meaninglessness that follows what’s viewed “important” by society at large, and the misalignment of priorities in today’s chaotic times”.

The next track is “Crooked Canvas”. Burk explains “This song is about the metaphorical wool being pulled over people’s eyes and the blind, general consumption of it. Whether it’s politics, religion, what shoes to buy, which pill will make your dick bigger. It’s about consumerism at its finest and my distaste for it.” The band’s Jeremy Schott adds “The music video was shot by our pals Brad and Jason at Big Walrus Productions. We worked with them on our last video for “Your Generation”. We shot the video on a church set, keeping with the theme of the song about being told how to think and what to consume. Steven Burhoe edited the video.”

The 3rd offering is “Beyond The Trees” has a more throw-back, 80’s vibe of alternative rock. Nigel talks about the genesis of the song “I wrote this song when we were taking off from Hartsfield Jackson in Atlanta. I had the window seat and looked out as we gained altitude, watching the trees and greenery of Georgian landscape becomes smaller and smaller. I started thinking of this dream I’d had recently about a killer in the forest and wrote this on the back of a barf bag in about 10 minutes. The words just sprayed out.”

Burk is blunt in his assessment of the 4th tune on the EP: “I think, simply put - “Fuck This” is a song about battling inner demons. It’s also about self-sabotage and the fight to survive yourself in your darkest moments”

The EP’s focus track is “Landmine”, which is a heavy, chugging anthem that’s forges ahead like a sonic M1 Abrams Tank. Burk says “Landmine’ is a follow-up to our song “Your Lesson”, which delved into succumbing to various forms of temptation and how we’re taught to fear divine retribution if we fall prey to these desires. “Landmine” takes it a step further - it’s akin to a bad acid trip where everything is distorted… You come to the realization that there is no absolution and you’re going to burn anyway. It’s like walking through a field of landmines – you’re going to blow up, no matter what you do”. Video Director Chris Michael explains the “Landmine” video concept: “I teamed up with my buddies in CARSEX to bring their video “Landmine” to life. This track’s a banger, and I was honored to storyboard and shoot it. The concept dives into the effects of an acid trip: The cool blue colors for the initial calm, then harsh reds and awkward angles take over as the hallucinations hit. We swapped the mic for a grenade to push the hallucinatory theme further.” He continues: “We were under red and blue lighting for hours so long we actually thought we were tripping…. Some of the guys swore the colors were shifting and moving. Everything about the shoot stayed true to the theme: chaos, distortion, and the constant threat of land mines.”

Track 6, “D.K.C.” is a heavy, groove laden and ominous song that reaches out and grabs you by the throat – to shake you and wake you up. And that’s just what the band was shooting for. Burk explains “I remember it was earlier in the year and I was reading the paper one morning. There was yet another article about a school shooting. The article went on to report that there had been more mass shootings than there were days in the year at that point. At this point in America’s history, this isn’t talked about enough and just put by the wayside or made a new norm. I wanted to write a song from the perspective of a victim’s father to give it more identity and humanity.” Schott goes further: “School shootings have become such a common place in the world that we live in today, it’s frightening. When we first started writing this song, I did some research and found that parents of victims of school shooting call themselves part of the Dead Kid’s Club or D.K.C. I found this heartbreaking. Most of the spoken word part of the bridge and outro are direct quotes from the parents.”

Wrapping up the EP is “Stella”, which Burks states “Is mostly about the general encompassing darkness surrounding a mind, plagued with whatever arrangement from the array of demons available on the market today. It’s about the “burn and fall” of a young star, who can’t cope with the roller coaster ride of fame”.
