BTS is Back and "Butter" than Ever

No more butter puns, I promise.

It’s almost summer for a lot of us, and we’re starting to see the light at the end of the COVID tunnel. It makes sense to get a fantastic summer jam around this time to help lift our spirits and get us ready to enjoy the warm months to the fullest. Well, the most popular K-pop group in the world is here to deliver exactly what we need.

BTS has done it again. Their newest single “Butter”, released May 21st, is an absolute blast to listen to. The super punchy verses hook you immediately and bring you effortlessly to the chorus. It’s a fun ride you’ll want to leave on repeat while you drive to the beach. Everything from the group’s vocals to the backing instrumentals is light and bouncy, making it the perfect summer jam. I’m particularly a huge fan of the rap line, Suga, RM, and J-Hope, having their parts at the end. It’s a hard-hitting way to finish out the song.

The lyrics for “Butter” are also very fun and playful. You’ll have the words stuck in your head insanely fast. I had the chorus down after the first listen, and it lives in my head rent free now. “Butter” is another love song with exciting wordplay and endless confidence. It’s always delightful to hear BTS owning the lyrics and enjoying themselves while doing it. They’re good at what they do, and they know it. Another fun thing I enjoyed about the vocals is the amount of lines for Jin. Jin unfortunately tends to not get as many lines as the others, but this one is a welcome change. Jin gets a ton of center time in “Butter”. His voice is wonderful, and I love hearing him as often as possible.

We have to talk about that video too. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, with the teaser being in black and white, but I ended up absolutely adoring the whole thing. It starts in black and white, but it quickly bursts into the usual K-pop fanfare with tons of bright colors and outfit changes galore. Honestly I wasn’t ready for a lot of the amazing visuals I got. Jungkook’s long hair is unexpectedly awesome. Then there’s J-Hope and that slicked back hair, I almost fell out of my chair. My personal favorite is the little dance sequence with each of the guys in the elevator. You get to see their different styles and how they gel together, which is always a treat. Speaking of that elevator, my favorite part of the video is hands down V’s orange suit ensemble. Listen, he always looks good, but I absolutely was not ready to be swept off my feet like that.

I guess in that respect, BTS really did what they set out to do with “Butter”. It’s fun, but it also has that confidence that’s finally become a huge staple in these later songs from the group. You can hear it in their voices, and see it in the way they carry themselves throughout the video. They’re incredibly talented, and as always, watching them own that talent and show it off is a joy.

Overall, “Butter” is just straight up fun. It has infectious energy to get you in a great mood, and that’s really the best quality about it. Who doesn’t want to listen to a joyful, feel-good song?
