A first person look at the hunger powering Hybrid 2 by NWO Sparrow
I know why Big Shot has been one of my favorite rappers since 2015 because I know from personal experience that he is who he says he is. Artists in hip hop are often flaunting, self centered, unevidently confident, and bragadocious. Yes, Bigshot can be that way as well, however the truth is he is really him by measurement of authenticity. These other guys can put lines together and make it sound good. What separates him is that what he says is grounded in how he lives. I have seen it. I have watched him move through real life with the same energy he brings into the booth. That bond between what is said and what is lived is why I always come back to his music.
When I first heard that Bigshot was coming back to music I thought ok, he'll drop a track, eat a bit then go back into hibernation. It wasn’t until I really looked into the release that I realized this record Back Outside is the lead single to his upcoming album Hybrid 2. That shifted everything for me. It felt like he was not just dropping something to make noise, he was making a statement. That sense of purpose came through before I even pressed play.
This record Back Outside has arrived at the right time. Next year The Clipse are up for Rap Album of the Year for the Grammys and solid music has been making a comeback. The authentic east coast feel of music is now back bubbling and only the most authentic voices are prevailing. That shift in the landscape sets the stage for someone like Bigshot to rise again. The sound he represents is finally lining up with what the culture is craving.
This brings me to Bigshot. He has been dropping consistent music since I met him in 2014 and hasn’t really stopped. He weathered the storm of Tik Tok trends, viral stunts, and content creation. He is a rapper, and one that wants recognition for what he does. That commitment is rare. Many artists bend toward whatever is trending to stay seen. Bigshot stayed rooted in craft, in storytelling, in delivery. The industry tried to drift in a direction that rewarded quick entertainment. He stayed in the pocket of real rap.
Back Outside exudes that energy. From the jump Bigshot opens with “Say what I want cuz gangstas respect honesty, ima keep stunting for them years I lived modestly.” This line hits because it carries two truths at once. He is speaking to a code of respect rooted in real environments while also addressing his own evolution. He is celebrating what he can do now after years of restraint, sacrifice, and discipline. That honesty is not manufactured. It is lived in. That is why it lands. Even how Bigshot closes the record with the lines “coming for everything them guys owe plus interest.” This is not just a punchline. It is a mission statement. He is calling back every opportunity lost, every moment overlooked, every time he was counted out. The interest is the energy he built through hunger and patience. It is the fire of someone who never stopped sharpening his talent even when the spotlight moved elsewhere.
The production is haunting and cold with the east coast feel of rider music. It sets the mood in a way that supports him without overshadowing what he is saying. This song kicks off the rollout but it is not full single potential like Bigshot’s Any Gyal or any of the records off the Sex Tapes. This record is for the spitters and a reminder to the listeners that yes Bigshot can make a single or an album full of radio ready songs, but at the end of the day he is a spitter. The best line here from the record is the Chris Brown line. I’ll let yall listen and experience it for yourselves.
The video done by Snacks Shot It is compellingly edited and well captured. The video feels authentic. It paints Bigshot as a leader of his city with residents getting camera time to sing along to the hook “yeah we back outside.” Bigshot is all over his city in black and white cinema with touches of color to make the visual pop. The video production is modern and direct. Again, this may be leading the rollout but I don’t believe this is the official lead single. Bigshot is authentic, real, gifted, and back. So many rappers can say that. Only few of them have omissions and even less of them are telling the truth. Bigshot is telling the truth.
