"Since I was a little girl I loved cinema and cameras..." Barbara Safonkina is no ordinary videographer; she has a rare gift: the ability to distill raw emotion and narrative into mesmerizing visuals, and breathe life into them. A Moscow-born videographer with a passion for storytelling, Safonkina has carved out a remarkable career crafting evocative visuals for brands, musicians, and influencers. But her journey to becoming a master of her craft is as compelling as the stories she tells through her lens.

It all began with a small yet significant gift—a camera from her father. “I got my first camera from my dad when I was 10 years old,” she recalls. “I still use it to this day. Sometimes my clients prefer a vintage vibe to their videos, and that’s where my old Sony Handycam comes in.” That humble Handycam would lay the foundation for a journey that would take her from the streets of Moscow to the glittering runways of Paris Fashion Week.

At 15, Safonkina moved to the South of France, a place where new experiences shaped her creative instincts. Here, she completed high school and later relocated to Paris to study fashion. The City of Light became the crucible for her burgeoning talent. While immersed in fashion studies, she began working as a social media content creator for small local brands. These early projects allowed her to experiment with storytelling and visual design, ultimately steering her toward videography. “Slowly, but soon enough, I started realizing that I didn’t necessarily want to stay in fashion directly, and the 9-to-5 schedule was definitely not for me,” she shares. “So after I finished my bachelor degree, I decided to pursue my videographer career, and honestly, it felt so right and natural that it didn’t take too much time to really take off.” The decision to pivot was instinctive, and it quickly paid off.

Her first major opportunities came from the pulsating energy of Paris Fashion Week. Armed with her camera and an unerring eye for detail, Safonkina captured backstage moments for acclaimed brands like Y/Project, Givenchy, and Elie Saab. These projects honed her technical skills and solidified her reputation as someone who could turn fleeting moments into compelling narratives.

It wasn’t long before her path led to music videos, a medium that felt like a natural extension of her love for storytelling. In November 2023, Safonkina collaborated with New York-based singer Olive Louise on the video for “No Medicine.” The Victorian-tinged visuals, haunting and elegant, became an instant talking point. Their partnership continued in January 2024 with “Greatness,” a video balancing whimsy and shadow. The latter is now competing at the Berlin Music Video Awards 2025, a testament to her ability to create visuals that linger in the mind.

Safonkina’s versatility shines in every project she undertakes. From promotional visuals for Canadian singer-songwriter Goldie Boutilier’s EP Emerald Year to a campaign for Russian ready-to-wear brand Brusnika, filmed in the romantic streets of Paris, her work is a masterclass in adapting to diverse narratives. Each frame she crafts feels like a portal into a world of emotion, style, and story.

Looking ahead, Safonkina shows no signs of slowing down. In December 2024, she will unveil a promotional music video for New York jazz musician Angela Grey, followed by the February 2025 release of “I Wish I Could Love You Less” from Grey’s album Prisoner of Love. The latter promises to be a poignant breakup story of a young woman leaving a long-term relationship to pursue her dreams. In the fashion sphere, Safonkina’s ongoing collaborations include campaigns for Russian brand Rimarka and American brand Dana Bandi, projects that reflect her ability to traverse the spectrum from introspective to celebratory.

Safonkina remains grounded despite her growing success. She dreams of expanding her skills by studying cinematography, a natural progression for someone so attuned to the art of visual storytelling. “So far, I can say that choosing my career path as a videographer is the best decision I’ve ever made,” she reflects. “It feels so natural that even when something doesn’t work in my favor, there’s never even a single thought in my brain about quitting it.”

Barbara Safonkina doesn’t just create videos; she builds worlds, frame by frame. With a passion that burns brighter than ever and a vision that continues to evolve, she is poised to leave an enduring legacy in the world of visual art.
