Inside A is For Atom's quietly powerful new singles "Enola" and "Closer"

By Whitney MillerPublished about 5 hours ago 3 min read

Blending restless indie rock instincts with electronic unease and personal songwriting, A Is for Atom continues to occupy a space that is both familiar and quietly unclassifiable.

With recent releases Enola and Closer, the project reveals two complementary sides of its creative identity. But even that description feels slightly too confined. Best not to overthink it. Better simply to step inside these songs and let them unfold on their own terms.

“Enola” doesn’t so much arrive as it gradually comes into focus. It emerges through flickering electronics, steady guitars and a sense of emotional tension that doesn't quite settle. There is movement here, but rarely in straight lines. The song circles its ideas, revisits fragments of memory and reshapes personal history into something broader and more symbolic. It's a bit like standing inside overlapping timelines, where past, present and imagined futures bleed into one another.

Rather than relying on obvious hooks or dramatic peaks, “Enola” builds atmosphere. Layers stack quietly. Textures blur at the edges. Nostalgia and dread coexist in the same breath. Youthful freedom brushes up against cultural and historical unease. Nothing is resolved neatly, and that is precisely its strength. This is music that trusts ambiguity and understands the power of unanswered questions.

If “Enola” looks outwards and backwards, “Closer” turns its gaze inwards. Where the former simmers with tension, the latter glows with fragile intimacy. Soft electronics, subtle rhythms, and carefully spaced chords create an environment rather than a backdrop.

Here, connection becomes the driving force. Beats pulse gently, like a distant heartbeat, never overwhelming the song’s emotional center. “Closer” unfolds patiently.

There is no grand romantic fantasy here, and no promise of an easy resolution either. Instead, this song treats togetherness as something chosen again and again, even when uncertainty threatens to pull people apart. This is vulnerability and sincerity without sentimentality - a rare balance in contemporary songwriting.

Taken together, “Enola” and “Closer” feel less like isolated singles and more like companion pieces.

One wrestles with history, memory and anxiety. The other searches for refuge in personal connection. Both rely on mood, texture and emotional honesty rather than spectacle. Both reward patience. And both reflect the growing maturity of songwriter and producer Mike Cykoski.

In a time marked by such instability, cultural division and a constant global unease, A is For Atom's recent singles "Enola" and "Closer" are especially resonant.

"Enola" reflects the anxiety of living in the shadow of past and present crises, where history, power and consequence seem to repeat themselves over in new forms, while "Closer" responds by turning towards human connection as a form of quiet resistence.

Together, they capture the reality of navigating a world that is increasingly volatile.

About A Is for Atom

A Is for Atom is the long running indie rock and electronic project of New York based musician, producer and songwriter Mike Cykoski. An NYU graduate with a Master’s in Music Technology, Cykoski has also studied at Juilliard, Harvest Works and Dubspot, giving him a rare blend of classical foundation, experimental curiosity and electronic fluency.

Since launching the project, A Is for Atom has evolved from literate indie rock roots into a more fluid sound that incorporates drum machines, layered synths and modern production techniques without sacrificing depth. His music balances structure and spontaneity, technical precision and instinctive creativity.

Cykoski has performed extensively across the U.S. and internationally, with notable appearances in Ireland, Mexico City, Toronto (including NXNE and Canadian Music Week), New York City and Austin. His releases, including the EPs Song for You and Last Man on the Moon, have earned consistent critical praise.

More recently, his work reflects a deeper sense of perspective shaped by personal growth and parenthood. Whether working with dense electronic textures or stripped back arrangements, his focus remains firmly on serving the emotional core of each song.
