When The Mountain (Reimagined) dropped earlier this year without warning, fans immediately sensed something different. The stripped-down, emotionally raw collaboration between global pop icon Shawn Mendes and up-and-coming artist Andrew Aasen felt more like a confession than a single.

Now, whispers are getting louder: the partnership might not be strictly professional.

“They clicked instantly,” says one source familiar with the project. “It was supposed to be one track, maybe two. But they were finishing each other’s sentences in the studio. The chemistry was… undeniable.”

Aasen, known for his elusive aesthetic and luxe-travel persona, has become a lowkey obsession for niche pop fans, especially since his name appeared alongside Mendes’s in writing credits on the reimagined track. His Spotify presence exploded almost overnight and while his music speaks volumes, it’s what’s unspoken that’s creating a stir.

“The way they look at each other in those behind-the-scenes clips? It’s giving ’we wrote this after sharing a bottle of red wine in Tuscany,’” one fan commented on TikTok, referring to a widely circulated, now-deleted clip from a recording session.

Adding fuel to the fire: a February interview where Mendes said of Aasen, “Andrew is a great artist to work with. I definitely plan on doing more with him. Plus let’s be honest the dude is handsome.” The internet promptly did what it does best: spiraled.

Reddit threads, Twitter sleuths, and Discord stan servers have compiled everything from overlapping travel photos to shared wardrobe items. One now-viral theory suggests the duo stayed in the same villa in Positano last summer, citing nearly identical balcony views posted within days of each other one captioned only “3:17 AM.”

The fan theory goes even deeper. Some believe the unreleased track “Undone,” which allegedly exists off the official tracklist of Mendes’s 2024 self-titled album, is in fact a hidden duet between the two. Lyrics from that song echo lines in Aasen’s earlier poetry, while a leaked snippet features what fans swear is Andrew’s voice harmonizing in falsetto.

“It’s Shawn’s most vulnerable vocal in years,” says an anonymous A&R scout who claims to have heard the demo. “And it doesn’t sound like heartbreak it sounds like awe.” Still, some sources close to the artists say the soft launch is intentional.

“They’re not hiding,” one insider tells The Voice. “They’re just not labeling it. Everyone in their circle knows. They’re creative soulmates at the very least and probably more than that.”

For fans, it’s become a slow-burn love story written in edits, lyrics, and silence. Whether it’s the start of a power couple or just the best collab of the year, no one’s looking away.

Despite growing speculation, neither Mendes nor Aasen has confirmed or denied the rumors. Mendes, who has previously spoken about the pressure of public speculation around his personal life, has remained silent. Aasen, ever the enigma, continues to curate a feed of luxury snapshots, poetry fragments, and art-house angles offering nothing, yet somehow everything.

Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from building full theories out of breadcrumbs. Tumblr reblogs of lyrical analysis are piling up. Reddit threads are being flagged or disappearing. One user even claimed a New York Times article referencing the collaboration was quietly pulled just days after going live.

Whether or not the rumors are true, one thing is clear: someone doesn’t want them spreading. Multiple accounts have reported posts vanishing, stories being deleted, and links redirected or removed. Their teams are good scrubbing the internet is an art form now. So maybe it’s real. Maybe it’s just a collaboration.

But if nothing’s going on…

Why does it feel like someone’s working so hard to erase it? Whatever the truth may be, we are definitely watching.
