Animals In Denial Release Latest Single "Coi"

A Raw Blend of Industrial Rock that Reflects on Toxic Relationships and Healing

By Whitney MillerPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Christian Imes, the creator of Animals In Denial, delivers a dark and visceral punch with latest single "Coi."

Nearly two decades in the making, the evolution of this track mirrors Imes’ own personal and musical growth. What started out as a single electronic sequence created in 2003 has now emerged as a fully realized industrial rock anthem, packed with emotional weight and gritty intensity.

"Coi" is a raw and unfiltered expression of frustration, betrayal, and the long road to healing.

Influenced by the likes of Nine Inch Nails as well as classic industrial acts, the song channels that unmistakable 90's grit.

Imes meticulously crafted the track’s electronic elements using Acid Pro 4, giving it a mechanical pulse that drives the song forward. The relentless rhythm is paired with layers of aggressive guitar work.

Using both his Epiphone Les Paul Special 2 and cherished 85 Gibson Les Paul Studio, he lays down searing riffs that slice through the electronic backdrop with raw intensity. The guitars provide the heartbeat of the track, delivering the necessary power and emotional heft to accompany the darker themes.

Imes says about "Coi":

"Acid Pro 4 was what I used to sequence all of the electronic bits together, and the guitar parts just came naturally, all of them being first takes. I was listening to a lot of the Fragile and Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails back-to-back, and so the idea of hard-hitting groovy drums, with a massive wall of sound, searing guitars cutting right through the middle. I wanted something that was dance worthy but rocked like metal! It was very much meant to convey the idea of a super abnormally bright night.

I used the Epiphone Les Paul Special 2 for the main guitar parts, both rhythm and lead tracks. I did use my 85 Gibson Les Paul Studio for some extra fills and to fatten up the lead lines in the chorus. I had just gotten the Gibson, it was a birthday present from my mom, and so I really wanted to use on something so I probably could’ve finished the song without it but I just couldn’t resist."

Lyrically, Imes confronts the pain of a toxic relationship. The line "I’m sick on the in, you’re sick on the out" perfectly captures the internal and external conflict that defined this period, reflecting both his personal struggles and the disconnection between him and his ex-partner.

It’s a brutally honest look at the aftermath of emotional manipulation. In hindsight, Imes acknowledges that both he and his ex-partner were navigating their own struggles and he can now view the relationship from a more mature perspective. However, the hurt was still fresh when the song was written.

Production-wise, "Coi" stands out for its attention to detail. From the sampled basslines to the carefully layered guitar and electronic elements, every sound is intentional here. The bass, while generated through samples and keyboards, blends well with the live instruments giving the song a powerful low-end foundation that anchors the frenetic energy of the drums and guitars. It’s a heavy, brooding track that blends the aggression of industrial rock with moments of reflection.
