A Letter to a Later Partner
A song I wrote for someone I hadn't *yet* met

Have you ever written a letter, a list, or a song about someone or something you were looking for, but hadn't reached yet?
I wrote this song after a horrible college breakup, when I was looking for anything but what I just had. I took off immediately after the breakup to stay with family and drove to Arizona. Life safety tip: driving long distance while crying isn't the safest in the world, don't be afraid to take breaks and pull off the road. I got to Arizona, watched my little cousin graduate from High School, run across the field to her high school sweetheart (spoiler alert: they're getting married this December) and realized I was going to be perfectly fine. I knew all the love that I had just given to the wrong person would be meant for someone else later down the line. I knew I wanted someone to make me feel young, but steady. To laugh with, and to cry with. To go to bed with every single night, and stay up talking or fall straight asleep because we're so comfortable in each other's arms.
Almost 10 years later, I found it.
Somehow during the pandemic of all times, after years of trying to date and finding a couple people I thought may have been the person I was looking for, I found the right one. As I learned all of his quirks and kindness, I thought back to the song that I had written all those years ago, called Weightless in the Sheets:
VERSE 1
There’s so many dime a dozens
But baby you’re the one that does it for me,
I can’t help but let you know that, my emotions to show it, you’ll see
Play the rhythm nice and slow, let our bodies start to flow, we can take this anywhere you wanna go
CHORUS
We’ll run into the fire as we turn into flames
And fall straight into heaven, and I’ll fall for you along the way
We drift up out the ocean and sink into the deep let the light slowly begin to fade, feeling weightless in the sheets, weightless in the sheets
oh oh oh oh feeling weightless in the sheets
VERSE 2
Everytime is like the first time, boy you make me feel like we’re 17,
I get lost inside your beauty and your love it takes us far from gravity,
Nothing feels as good as this, the invitation on your lips, and we know that all it takes is just a kiss.
Ohhhhhh weightless
