5 Songs I Despise

For Sam Spinelli's "Do Your Worst!" Challenge

Well, I spent a long time thinking about this as I've known about this challenge for a while now. I won't spend too long on the introduction but I understand that the songs I dislike perhaps won't be everyone's choices and that's alright with me. I'm sure we can find a common ground somewhere else. Let's get into it...

1. Footloose by Kenny Loggins

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to the worst song ever recorded. Footloose completely and utterly ruins it for me. From its cheesy lyrics to sounding like it was written for a children's birthday party - the song, the film and everything about it just completely rubs me up the wrong way. I used to listen to the 80s Radio Station before work and would make a point of not listening to it on Fridays because without a shadow of a doubt this song would come on and absolutely ruin my day. The dance just really pushes it over the edge for me - you can't get much worse than that.

2. Don't You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds

I thoroughly dislike the film The Breakfast Club and I apologise for that but this song is one of the reasons for it. Again, it's just so damn cheesy and sounds like it was recorded by a twelve-year-old band group at school. The faux-melancholic drole is just as annoying as listening to the cheesy 'song of rebellion' you see above. I'm sorry about hating this song but I simply can't listen to it without getting second hand embarrassment. The film it is the soundtrack for seems to get worse with age as well - The Breakfast Club simply isn't cool if you're over 25 - it's irritating.

3. Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer

I didn't see the music video until years later but even the women look bored as hell. I have no idea what is going on with this song but it's nothing good. It sounds like what divorced people listen to in Thailand at their interpretation of an American diner. I have no idea why but this song is very, very annoying. To my surprise, when this song came out, it charted and did very well. For the life of me I can't understand who was listening to this tripe and actually enjoying it. I am convinced you are all lying.

4. Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon

This is one of the songs they'll play me in hell. The first time I heard this song I was actually hoping it was one of those parody-joke songs but no, someone was serious about writing this. There was more than one person who thought this song was a good idea. Good grief, the lyrics and the beat definitely gives me Footloose-vibes. It's overly cheery and just completely cheesy. I hate how cheesy it is. It sounds terrible. I won't be taking questions.

5. Material Girl by Madonna

Please don't hurt me but I despise this song. Again, it's the catchy-cheesy-silly nonsense of it. It simply doesn't appeal to the ears. It just makes me die a little inside when I hear it. Don't get me wrong, I like Madonna - I just really don't like this song at all. It's one of those songs that I think was written by a 12-year-old. There's barely any lyricism, there's nothing glueing the song together - it just sounds like a cheesy mess.

I think we are all lucky this list wasn't just five songs by Ed Sheeran because it was definitely going to be.

Alright, I did say that I like Madonna so here's my favourite song by her: Vogue. This is truly iconic.

Now I really want to see a playlist of the top 5 songs you would recommend. These are definitely controversial choices (nothing wrong with that, though)

I find many 80s songs rather annoying but it wasn't exactly my era so perhaps that's why? I love your descriptions of why you dislike each song. Very entertaining.

Hahaha, I appreciate the completely unexpected tail end roast of Ed Sheeran! I agree with your list— cheesy music is such a bummer. Shut up and dance is one of my least favorite songs ever, and you’re right— it’s bewildering that people green lit that. What a world!

  • I don't know any of these songs except for Material Girl. I know that because it was trending on TikTok awhile back. And yes, it was so annoying for me hahahahaha

I agree! Both 1 & 2 are very annoying! For some reason, I still feel like I hear Footloose everywhere eventhough it's such an old song. I also think The Breakfast Club is over rated, but the song might have ruined it lol.

The 80s would have been hard for you.
