2020 Rewind Playlist - Skeegii The Writer

Giving you a run through of my top 20 tracks of 2020. These have all gotten me through the pandemic...and then some 😉

H.E.R in her element performing "Damage" - I do not own the rights of this image.

This has been a rough year for everyone. We've lost many entertainers, celebrities, and many loved ones. Natural disasters have hit, and of course, we can't forget this untimely pandemic.

Although all of this has taken a toll on all aspects of life, what has kept you going? I know what's kept me going; Writing lyrics, poems, creating beats, and in general...Music.

Megan Thee Stallion has been a powerhouse all 2020. From giving you that "Suga" in March. To giving you that "Good News" in November. Drake taught us how to "Toosie Slide" in his "Black leather gloves no sequins". And Justin Bieber gave us something "Yummy".

Although I have many songs that I'd love to list from this year, and from previous years (I loveeeee music and have so many favorites!), I will only give you a select few.

I'm Skeegii The Writer, and just like Teyana Taylor, I need you to "Bare With Me" as I give you my top 20 songs of 2020!

1. Freak Nasty by Megan Thee Stallion

Although this is a song from 2018, off of Megan's album entitled "Tina Snow", I've GOT to include this one. The whole album is hot but when I tell you, that TikTok has been one of the strongest platforms for Megan this year, I mean it.

I personally don't have a TikTok account (sorry not sorry), but I'm on IG and I've saw multiple videos of people "Running through a !&*#% house like a tomb raider". That is the highlight of this song, it is now more popular than it was in 2018's release of the album. I have more on Megan to come because she is definitely on my list again.

2. Yummy by Justin Bieber

When this song 1st dropped, I didn't like it at all. However overtime, I found it to be quite catchy. Anything that I can dance to, is a whole bop on my list! His album entitled "Changes" dropped in February, on V-Day. As I listened to the whole album, I found many other songs that I loved. "Take It Out On Me", "Changes", "Habitual", and many others are my favorites. I was going to include some of those on my list for 2020, but "Yummy" is what started it all.

3. Whoa by Snoh Aalegra

I honestly don't know much about Snoh Aalegra. My 1st time hearing her of her was on Spotify, on an off day as I sipped my wine while cooking with my music on shuffle. After finishing a few songs on my queue, Snoh's "I Want You Around" started playing, I found myself wanting to hear more from her. I then discovered that she not only had a remix of this song with 6LACK, but that "Whoa" existed. These 2 songs are a whole vibe and...so is Snoh. I'm currently in a relationship and these 2 songs summarize how I feel about who I'm with. Definitely go listen to both songs, as well as her others.

4. Ungodly Hour by Chloe x Halle

I will keep this short and sweet. These 2 sisters are killing it! Protege's of the Queen Bey, this song was produced by Disclosure. Enough said! I'm done!

5 & 6

Life is Good by Future featuring Drake & Toosie Slide by Drake

If you know me, you know I love Drake. One, he is always full of surprises. And two, he's a Scorpio just like me and we vibe! Dude is attractive and I'd love to meet him one day. I just want to have a few drinks with him and shadow him in the studio. Is that too much to ask for?

Anyways! Drake dropped his album "Dark Lane Demo Tapes" in May. A month after dropping his video for "Toosie Slide". The video is so notable because he clearly filmed the video in his 100 million dollar mansion in Toronto, Canada. Clearly this was done because we are in a pandemic. You'll notice that he is also wearing a mask. This is one respectable and epic video. Plus, the mansion is LAVISH!

As for "Life is Good", it was released in 2019. The video dropped at the beginning of this year, in January and has over 1BILLION views on Youtube. Notice that this isn't featured on his album, but you can find this song on Future's album "High Off Life". As for Drake, judging by the 100 million dollar mansion, the partnership with Nike, and the many views/streams that he has, for him, life HAS to be good!

7. Let Me In by H.E.R

This year is the most I've ever gotten my hair done. I've spent so much on making sure my hair is together all year. During a visit, I heard this song playing. I instantly recognized the voice. I asked my stylist "Is this H.E.R?" She replied, "It is H.E.R". I thought this song was new and was just released. I was completely wrong. I love H.E.R, so how haven't I heard this song? To cut the long story short, I've played this song throughout 2020. I even watched a performance on Youtube and lived for it! I can also relate to this. In my relationship, I've asked for my woman to "Let Me In". Let me into your heart. Let me be to you what I know I can be. I can't do that if you won't let me.

I will never let this song go away and it is a metaphor for my relationship.

8. A Muse by DVSN

God...DVSN *Face palm*

I have no words for these guys. Do you wanna set a mood? Play DVSN...Are you trying to romance your woman or man? Play DVSN. Play every song. From every album. I love them! If I could put every album of theirs on my 2020 countdown, I would. So, you will only get this one song to listen to. The rest of the journey, is yours.

9. Go Crazy by Chris Brown featuring Young Thug

TikTok has been everyone's friend for pretty much the past 2 years. This song was also a hit on there, due to the fact that both Chris & Young Thug launched a "Go Crazy" dance challenge in May. Released off of the album "Slime & B", "Go Crazy" has received over 250 million streams on Spotify, and over 78 million views on Youtube.

The album itself hasn't received too much attention (it seems), but all of the released songs seem to be doing well. Recently, the song "City Girls" dropped. I love the video...However, once again, the reputation of it, isn't as popular as "Go Crazy". So with that, I expect Chris to drop another album next year. He never sleeps! (I love CB)

10. In Your Eyes by The Weeknd

He has been beaten up all year...As far as I can see. The bandages, the red suit, the blood, and he even got beheaded in his video....Scary! I love this song, but honestly the video is quite disturbing, among the others that he has dropped this year. I'd love to see him back next year and fully healed? I know it's all makeup but I miss the old version of him. Or at least the "better" version of him?

11. Get U Alone by Jacob Latimore

Jacob Latimore (if you don't know him), has been around since I were in middle school (early 2000's) and he has come a long way! If you watch the show "The Chi" then you'd know him as "Emmett". He has played in other roles such as "Sleight", which is a movie about a kid who has unexplained powers in his neighborhood. A kingpin basically discovers that he has these powers, and uses that against him.

Aside from acting, music is what he started out doing. "C3" dropped in May, and he has since then dropped multiple videos from the album. All of them were mostly done at home with a green screen, because of the pandemic. I have a liking for the album, but the most played song from there, for me, is "Get U Alone". It is a very sexy and sensual song.

12. Back To You by O.T Genesis, Chris Brown & Charlie Wilson

If you've heard "Outstanding" by The Gap Band, then you'll love this song, as Charlie Wilson (a member from the band) co-signed this sample. Released in October, I've not heard much buzz from it, but it's definitely on heavy rotation for me. Anything with Chris on it is usually a hit anyways.

13. Shots Fired by Megan Thee Stallion

The only reason this is on my list, is because there is some history behind this song. Meg was shot in July and so much happened around this situation. Now, that I think about it, explaining this situation is exhausting! It's pointless. Truth is, Megan is on top and ol boy isn't....Enough said. Besides, "Savage Remix" featuring Beyonce...Is still a highlight. It isn't on my list however. Why? Because I've heard it so many times to the point that I don't want to hear it anymore! The challenge. The TikTok. The everything. It is played out for me, but it isn't forgotten.

14. MOOD 4 EVA by Beyonce

Speaking of Beyonce, are we still listening to "Lion King: The Gift" album? I love it! We also received a Disney+ special movie from it called "Black Is King", this year and I enjoyed that as well. Though there were mixed reviews about it, I feel that it captured what was necessary. It was Art.

15. Bare With Me by Teyana Taylor

*Winding it down! These are top 5!*

May was just full of surprises! Including this one.

I remember seeing a preview of this video. Multiple dancers wearing suits; red, yellow, green, purple and so on. The song and video is now sitting at over 8 million views on Youtube. There have been TikTok challenges to this video as well. If you search the "JabbaWockeez Bare With Me dance video"...you won't be disappointed.

The song itself I'd define to be a classic. Now the album, is definitely something that you should take a listen to. I love Teyana.

16. Not Another Love Song by Ella Mai

Giving me Aaliyah vibes, there is just something about this song that is so soothing to my ear. Maybe it's the beat. Could be the words. In all, it just might be a whole vibe. I'm all for the vibes.

I'm surprised that we've not received an album from Ella Mai this year, but i hope to see one next year. I miss the poems at the end of all of her songs...I think. It just kind of reminds me of Usher when he talks in the beginning and endings of his songs, but in a poetic form. I like it but...it becomes repetitive. When that happens...I turn the song! I'm not the only one.

17. Mutual by Omarion featuring Wale

I have wore this song out! He just released a video for this too, and I'm still not tired of it. I will play this song tonight, tomorrow, and for as long as I want. Omarion is a Scorpio too man...Love this dude! I remember being called "Lil O" in middle school. I love dancing! I also knew all the moves to his previous videos back when "Ice Box" was hot.

Omarion to me is an icon and he is definitely the "King of Being Unbothered".

Please listen to "Mutual" as well as "Involved" from his album "The Kinection". Is this album his best? No. However, there are a few good songs that I love on there.

18. Rose by Ro James

His whole album is wonderful! I just have a list of faves (A long list...). I won't go into detail but I will say that you need to listen to:

- Last Time (Sampled Usher's "Can You Handle It" and this song does not disappoint)

- Touchy Feely

- Be Mine

- Rain (I sing this all of the time)

- Too Much featuring Miguel *DOPE!*

- Excuse Me (Stays on repeat)

- Outside the Box (How Bout That) (I just started liking this song...)

- Plan B featuring Brandy (It's not bad...)

-Slow Down (I just recently got into this song wholeheartedly...I like it now)

- You (He sang his heart out to this...WHEW!)

- Look of Things -Outro (I wish this wasn't an a capella...But it sounds really good)

Just please, please, please....Please listen to the whole album "Mantic" by this man. Also just go listen to Ro James. All of his song are hot! I can give you more to listen to but just look him up. You'll end up creating a whole playlist full of him...(And DVSN)

19. Chocolate Pomegranate by Ari Lennox

I love this song so much. The synths used for this track is beyond me. It gives me chills just listening to her voice blended with the synthesizer being used. This is another song that I will play every day, and I don't get tired of this.

I'm not a huge fan of Ari. I'm saying this because I don't listen to all of her songs. I have favs, but I don't have a full liking for her songs. I am always open to listening to new tracks, genres, and all of that. I just like what I like. This song however, is definitely one to remember.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST!

My favorite song! One of the songs that I play the most (apparently).

20. Damage by H.E.R

She just released this song in October, and she is currently sitting at 14 million views on Youtube and 13 million plus views on Spotify. This is another song that I wear out.

As for the video, it isn't too much and it isn't too little. It's just right.

Sexy, soulful, and it is just a whole mood.

Seeing her without shades on is just a breath of fresh air. When she sings, she does something to my soul.

The song is basically about trust and having up that guard. Should I give you the chance to be with me? If I do, will you hurt me? I don't wanna give you the chance to. So I'm gonna keep this guard up until I'm ready to let it down for you. I don't know your intentions. Are you here to love me or hurt me.

All of those things are explained in the song and I can relate to H.E.R in most of her songs. Including this one.

So below I’m dropping a screenshot of my stats from Spotify. You'll see the URL: http://www.statsforspotify.com . This is very useful if you're wondering about what songs you've listened to the most.

Visit the site, type in your Spotify login information, and there ya go! It'll generate your stats based off of what you've listened to for the past 3 months, 6 months, or even all time.

"Involved" unfortunately didn't make my list. I went from playing it often to not because the album came out. "Mutual" became an instant favorite before he released it.

In closing, I hope everyone ends 2020 in happiness. I hope 2021 is full of nothing but success, health, wealth, and love.

Tonight however, bring in the New Year with a few popped bottles of Belaire Luxe, Ciroc, and so on. Drink responsibly and have a Happy New Year!

I have plenty more coming soon.

Cheers to the New Year!
