His parents worried for months, years even, as to where their son went. The only clue they had was an old picture as to where Monroy might have gone, the Dimplow’s family cabin, but the police had searched every nook and cranny of the woods and the cabin. There was no sign of him anywhere. Mrs. Hampton cried and cried for days. She was devastated by the fact that her only son, a child, ran away. She told the police to leave Molly Mae and Sammy out of it, even though she knew there was the possibility they knew where her son was. 

She also knew that if they did that they would have told her, she knew that as his best friends in the whole world, they would have come to her, or found a way to tell her. Even if they had made promises not to tell, or that they themselves would have probably gone with him if he ran away. Mrs.Hampton moved away about a month after Monroy’s disappearance. There was simply no way she could stay in the same old rickety town she once so dearly immersed herself in, especially after the disappearance of her only child. She never gave up on hope, however.

Every once in a blue moon she would revisit the little town of Milestone. When she did return she would always find these petite notes on the front steps to their old home. They never had a signature, but they always did finish off with, “I’m alright, I love you.” Something Monroy always said to his mother right before going to bed as a very young child. After getting the first note she just knew, a mother's instinct to protect her young and make sure they’re ok, that the tiny note cards had to be from her baby boy.

Mrs. Hampton’s life was truly changed after her son left home. She slowly started to deteriorate and even her marriage was put on hold, But that never stopped her from looking. In the summer of 1995, just two years after Monroy’s disappearance, Mrs. Hampton was never really the same. She often wondered why Monroy had done the things he had done. But even though she never fully understood it, she partially knew it was all because of that Molly-Mae. Now, she knew that Molly had no idea of the things that Monroy had done right before him, what she now calls him “leaving home, unexpectedly,” and Mrs. Hampton liked Molly-Mae, but she couldn’t help but wonder as to why she didn’t know of Monroy’s actions.
