Stationery
O.K., people do wonder about my habit. I have to admit that it is not easy being me and having to suffer with an addiction to stationery. Yes, stationery. Papyrophilia. I am admitting something that most people would not find embarrassing, but to me it is something quite shameful, despite all of the success that it has given me. I even dread sharing this with you, especially after all that has passed between us. But why not? I have some time before my next meeting.

A Line in the Sand
When you are young, it is possible to believe that adults are there for you; that they are aware of what is best for you; that they are doing the right thing. I thought so for a very long time, all through the great disappointment that was my father, his replacement who could not stand even in his shadow as an example worth following, and many other figures in my life who were always lacking in some way. My moment of discovery came in the most innocent manner and I still recall what it was all about.

Disclaimer: I wrote this some time ago and I wonder now about the effect of technology not just on how we communicate and reach out to each other, but also on how we process information. If you read this very carefully, you can imagine being on the receiving end of these messages (one minute of a life). I hope that you appreciate it...

The Old Place
Part I The plane landed and he bounced in his seat as he felt the wheels touch the runway. He was glad that he was next to a window and could see where they were after such a long flight. His mother told him that they would stop in Miami before they reached the island, but that was only for a few hours. The pilot announced the time of arrival and the temperature as the plane came to a stop. His ears still bothered him and he did not like the gum his mother gave him. It didn't help unblock his ears, but he was glad to have something besides the food on the plane.

Crystal
The family made good time on the highway and arrived at the beach before a crowd could form. On a long weekend, the father and mother wondered if it was smart to take their boy and girl out to their old hangout; the place where they first met, fell in love, and continued to think about as a couple with responsibilities and little free time.

Compassion: A Theory
Do you remember when you were a student and had to write an exam in a classroom or, possibly, a gymnasium? Do you remember the stress you felt trying to remember the material that you had studied over the semester, or the material that you crammed into your head a few days or the night before sitting in front of that test? Do you remember watching your teacher walking up and down between the desks and tables, checking to see if anyone had any questions, concerns…or hidden notes and answers in their palms or up their sleeves? Do you remember anyone getting caught and having their paper taken away and the opportunity to pass erased? I do; I remember all of this. And, for a few semesters when I worked as an invigilator during university exams, I saw it all from the other side.
