 Planted in Fall, the heads need cool weather and well-draining soil, along with plenty of fertilizer. Coastal areas are most common because nitrogen-rich fertilizer is readily available there.

 Coastal and mountainous regions with mineral-rich water and soil, and sedimentary rock formations such as shale and mudstone, can provide the nutrients needed to support growth.  

  Grown in coastal and rocky areas, with frequent watering and mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. Lafeyan Cabbages need well-drained soil, with plenty of nitrogen-rich fertilizer.

 A purple tonic for pregnancy is made from fresh heads in fall and winter, and is bottled in a low-pH solution of water and potash to make it available other times of year.

 The black Lafeyan cabbage is said to be the favorite food of those born under Lafayette, the black moon. 

 Firm, crisp pink flesh with a large core allowing seeds to free themselves once ripe, giving the rattle apple its characteristic rattle. If properly dried, they color a muted purple, and the dull shaking of the seeds becomes a dry raspy rattling.  

 Rattle apples are good for baking and drying, not just whole as functional decor, but prepared as food. 

 Like many fruit trees, the Rattle Apple lies dormant during the long winter, starts growing leaves with the first spring showers, Budding at the end of spring. The fruit develops over the long hot summer, and fruits are picked at the end of summer or early fall. This gives the apples enough time to be prepared before the snow comes.

 Difficult to grow in large groves, preferring to grow amongst other plants in a shrubby forest. The fruit is more sensitive than most apple varieties, and needs partial shade to avoid burning and drying up on the branch. The tree can also be prone to pest infestation, so the Rattle Apple tree is often found with chamomile, comfrey, or hyssop growing around its trunk and under its canopy. They also tend to grow on the edges or intermingled with Marigold tree groves.  

 Needs fertile, well-draining soil. Partially shaded forested land, and plenty of water. 

 While not inherently magical, the rattle apple is often used in certain bardic and psudobardic spells that create sound. Either as a reagent or as the focus of the magical energy.

 The rattle has been associated with the movement of fairies through the trees. Because of this, Forest-dwelling folks tend to dry out the lesser-quality apples and hang them in orchards or add them to wreaths on their doors. The rattle is heard as a warning to the forest farmers. The original inhabitants of the forest, including Goblins, often incorporated these as decorative and sound elements of their staves and fetishes.
