Summer has a soundtrack, and sometimes it’s not gentle. Sometimes, it’s a relentless tap-tap-tapping from deep within the woods (or your subconscious) that won’t shut up until it’s heard. Enter: the woodpecker.

Sure, they’re cute: red crests, jittery heads, drumming like tiny feathered punks on nature’s drum kit, but let’s be honest, the woodpecker is the perfect symbol for something a little more… insistent. Unignorable. Kind of like your inner critic. Or your ex. Or anxiety dressed up in summer linen.

Why “Woodpecker” Works as a Poetry Prompt:

Woodpeckers don’t care if you’re on vacation. Neither do your feelings. Write about them anyway. Let that insistent little bird become your muse, your mirror, your metronome. Tap into it. Scratch it out. Drill down.

Just don’t ignore it. Because we both know it’s not going away.
