The Amazing Career of Suzanne Somers
One day after we received the news that Piper Laurie, the legendary actress best remembered for originating the role of the title character's mother in Carrie, passed away at 91, we received more heartbreak from the acting world. Suzanne Somers passed away just one day short of her 77th birthday, after a battle with breast cancer that spanned over two decades. Somers was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer back in 2000, with the illness returning this summer.

Avalanche Game 2 Recap: Good Things Come to Those Who Wait
The Colorado Avalanche's season opener saw the team flex on offense. Five goals, two on the power play, a dominant win over the Los Angeles Kings. Next up was an outing against the San Jose Sharks, and as a longtime Avs fan, I do have memories of the classic Avalanche/Sharks battles. However, those were against the strong Sharks teams who made the playoffs almost every year. These, sadly, are not those Sharks. The Sharks have suffered since reaching the Western Conference Final in 2019, and it seems like their rebuilding period will never end. Nevertheless, they were prepared for their second game of the season, as were the Avs.

2023 League Championship Series Preview
I always love that final round before the championship in sports. In the NBA and NHL, it's the Conference Finals. In the NFL, it's the Conference Championship. In Major League Baseball, it's the League Championship Series that has served as that penultimate semifinal round since 1969. It was during that year that the wave of expansion and relocation during that decade resulted in the American and National Leagues being split into two divisions: East and West. For 66 seasons, the pennant was decided via the league standings, but with two divisions in each league, the East and West winners faced each other in the League Championship Series, MLB's first official playoff round.

What Went Wrong: "Just Like Rear Ends"
You know, I wasn't expecting this year's postseason to be the forum for déjà vu, yet here we are. For the second straight year, the Tampa Bay Rays offense fizzled in October. For the second straight year, the Los Angeles Dodgers had all of the expectations in the world, yet found themselves humiliated in the Division Series. And for the second straight year, the Atlanta Braves were upset in the National League Division Series by the Philadelphia Phillies.

What Went Wrong: What a Waste
"Mom! The Dodgers are doing that thing again!" You know, I'm not even a fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, but living in Southern California, that's the team I hear about. Yes, the Los Angeles Angels exist, but outside of Shohei Ohtani, the team is irrelevant. In my story about the 1955 championship, I mentioned that the Dodgers were the ultimate "fool ya team" back when they played in Brooklyn. They always had great seasons, but could not win the Fall Classic. Though, if there was any fair excuse for them, they always ran into the New York Yankees. The Dodgers finally won in 1955, and after moving west, their "fool ya" days appeared to be behind them, though recent years have seen them go back to their Brooklyn days of blowing seasons.

Avalanche Game 1 Recap: The Road to Reclaim Begins
April 30, 2023. Since that very day, I've been waiting for this day, October 11, 2023. On the former date, that's when the Colorado Avalanche's attempt to repeat as Stanley Cup Champions came to a fast and abrupt end. I wasn't literally counting down the days, but I was looking forward to the following season, because Game 1 of 82 begins a mission to reclaim the throne.

Twins Eliminated by Defending Champs, but Have Reasons to be Positive
You will notice that the words, "What Went Wrong," are not featured in the title. That's because in this case, it's not warranted. "What Went Wrong" is my factual, biting, and (at times) humorous look at the teams whose postseasons came to an abrupt end. Regarding MLB and the NHL, it's a look at the teams who were eliminated during the playoffs, and when it comes to the NFL, it's about teams who were eliminated from playoff contention, usually in the final weeks and usually when they had good chances to get in but blew it. And again, depending on the team and the situation, I'm usually quite blunt when it comes to certain.

Villainess Review: Marsha (Found)
A loaded day that included postseason baseball, the NHL's first three games of the season, and NXT and AEW going head-to-head one more time, also included one of NBC's newest shows, Found. I remember seeing the promo for the show and was already in; the series stars Shanola Hamption as Gabi Mosley, a recovery specialist who was actually an abduction victim 20 years prior, held captive by a man only referred to as Sir--who is played by Zack Morris himself, Mark-Paul Gosselaar. As the pilot episode revealed, Gabi and her other captive, Bella, escaped from Sir on their own, because--sadly--society didn't (and still doesn't) care when Black girls go missing. The end of the pilot revealed that Gabi was holding Sir captive in her basement, and he had been assisting Gabi in her cases.

What Went Wrong: Orioles' Dream Season Ends in Nightmarish Fashion
A lot of attention was directed toward the Baltimore Orioles entering the 2023 MLB Postseason. There were reasons for that. In the time that has passed between their last postseason appearance in 2016 and now, it had been very rough for the franchise. The seasons were disastrous. The pitching was getting knocked around and beat up. The hitting wasn't coming through. They were paying Chris Davis $23 million/year to strike out three times a game and hit about 40-60 points below the Mendoza Line. It was just terrible all around.

NFL Week 5 Recap: Down and Out in Santa Clara
The Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers. If you grew up in the 1990s like I did, then hearing that gives you goosebumps. The rivalry actually dates back as early as "The Catch," but during the 1990s, the Cowboys and Niners were the NFC's two biggest Super Bowl threats. Even as a Green Bay Packers fan who spent my childhood in the 1990s hoping that we'd get a leg up on either team, I was very excited for this matchup on Sunday Night Football.
