I ran out and have been claiming I need to work as my alibi to get away from Chase. The remorse is gnawing at me; declaring I was done felt harsh and impulsive. All day, his look of sheer terror has haunted me. That raw fear in his eyes after my words—it’s all I can focus on.

I know why I walked away. My words were aimed at hurting him back, a petty jab born out of frustration and pain, knowing it would only escalate our conflict. Now, I find myself lingering outside Blake's room for hours, using his meeting as a pretext to hide my reluctance to face what I’ve done.

As the door opens and people walk out, I take a deep breath and step inside. Blake greets me with a smile that fades as he reads my expression. He pauses mid-step, a resigned sigh escaping him. “How bad this time?”

“Worse than ever,” I admit, the weight of the situation settling over me as I collapse into a seat. Blake joins me, his presence a silent support.

“It can’t be that bad, Jax,” he probes gently.

But it is. “The way he reacted, made it sound like he didn’t want any of it. I forced the situation, treating it like some kind of game, and he reacted—punched me, called the whole thing disgusting and repulsive.”

Blake’s reaction is immediate, his eyes widening in disbelief. “But I saw it last night; he seemed into it.”

A flicker of doubt crosses my mind. Had he really been, or had he felt he couldn’t refuse? Could I have misread the whole situation so badly?

“Don’t,” Blake cuts off my dark thoughts sharply. “Remember how he used to kiss you and then bolt, claiming he didn’t want it? We always knew he’d recoil if he ever took that step, regardless of who initiated it.”

Guilt twists in my gut as I confess, “I might have told him it was over, that I was done.” The anger in my voice had masked my true feelings—I hadn’t meant it. Blake’s shocked stare only deepens my regret. "I know, it was a bad move."

Blake nods. His expression is full of worry. “How did you leave it?”

I hesitate, the weight of my actions settling in. “That was how I left it, Blake. I said it and walked out. I was thinking of messaging him, but I bet he’s already back to pretending he doesn’t care, going to bring home random women just to prove a point.”

That had been his pattern before. He’d act as if our breakup was nothing to him. As if it didn’t touch him, parading woman after woman through our lives. I doubted anything I said now could penetrate his walls—they’d just deflect my words, even if I pleaded.

“Let’s get back. You can’t hide away from this,” Blake says, leaving no room for me to argue, standing and heading for the door. Reluctantly, I follow. As we walk back, Blake manages to reassure me that maybe this time, it won’t be as bad. Despite knowing it’s wishful thinking, it comforts me.

“You know, we could just lock him in a room with Dhalia, then he can’t keep running from her,” Blake suggests with a chuckle.

“I think that would be Dahlia’s dream,” I reply, and we both laugh, the tension easing slightly as we enter.

As we step inside, I see Chase and Dhalia at the table. They stand, and Chase rushes over. He’s been crying? Surprised, I glance at Blake who mouths, ‘What the hell?’ back at me.

Chase’s arms wrap around me in a tight embrace. “I’m sorry,” he whispers, his voice raw. This vulnerability isn’t typical for Chase.

Suddenly, Dhalia’s shout cuts through the moment: “I swear down, you mention what you saw, and I will cut it off and choke you to death with it!” She’s holding a knife against Mick’s cock, his hands raised in alarm, his eyes wide with fear.

God, I love this woman. Her fierce protectiveness sends a thrill through me.

Chase steps forward, his laughter breaking the tension as he pulls Dhalia away from Mick gently. “For fuck’s sake, Princess, he knows,” he says, amusement colouring his tone.

“He does?” Dhalia looks confused, and we all break into laughter. Mick, relieved, steps in and closes the door behind him.

“Yes, Sweetness, he does!” I join in the laughter, still reeling from the shift in the room.

“But his eyes widened!” Dhalia turns to glare at Mick, who’s still visibly shaken up from her threat.

“Because I’d never seen Chase show so much emotion before, and I heard the argument. I was ready for his usual cold shoulder,” Mick explains, his voice shaky, a bead of sweat trailing down his forehead.

Watching Dhalia return Mick’s dagger with an apologetic yet firm smile, I feel a mix of admiration and relief. “Well, I apologise for that, but I still mean it,” she says sweetly, then walks back to the table, and Mick leaves.

As laughter continues, I feel a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, she is the one to get through to Chase.

We settle down at the table with Dhalia, the tension palpable. I know I need a private moment with Chase, but it feels like we should clear the air now, even with Dhalia here.

“I’m sorry,” I begin, my gaze locked with Chase’s. “What I said... you know, I would never actually do that. I was hurt. You made it sound like what happened between us was part of some sort of game I was playing.”

Chase starts to speak, but I raise my hand, signalling him to let me finish. “No, just listen for a second. You then called us disgusting, and yes, now I see that you weren’t really talking about us but about how you saw yourself.”

“I never meant you!” Chase interjects, his voice tense but sincere.

I nod, acknowledging his intent. “I know. And I’m sorry, too. What happened last night shouldn’t have, and this morning made me realise that I took advantage of the situation.” As the day progressed, my actions felt increasingly indefensible. I begin to stand, intending to leave, but Dahlia's hand on my arm stops me, her expression stern.

“Jax, I...” Chase falters, struggling with his words. “You didn’t take advantage. I agreed, yes. I might have said no, but I didn’t physically try to stop you. Part of me wanted it to continue, which is why I never really put up a fight. You didn’t force anything.”

His assurance should relieve me, but guilt still gnaws at me. “That’s how it feels to me,” I confess. His reaction, and his words also confirmed that I took advantage of him.

“No! Jax, you know full well I can make it clear when I don’t want something. We’ve been there before, and I've made it perfectly clear I didn't want to, and you’ve respected it. This time, I let you. Yes, I said no, but that was more about me not agreeing with myself.”

His words help ease the tension in my shoulders.

Chase then shifts his gaze to Dhalia. The shift in their relationship and connection is different, and it indicates a deeper conversation has taken place. Maybe now he's not shutting her out?

“Three months,” he suddenly declares, catching us off guard. “My aim is that in three months, I no longer hide this. If in three months I still refuse, you two,” he gestures between me and Blake, “have the right to do whatever, even if it means fucking each other in one of our clubs to make it known.”

I shake my head quickly. “No, Chase. Do it when you’re ready. Don’t put a timer on it—that will just add pressure.”

“I’m telling you because it’s my choice,” he insists firmly. “It’s been years, so, three months. Then, if I can’t say it openly, you two are free to flaunt it to the world.”

The declaration hangs in the air. I know this is his attempt to force himself to be okay with this and with people knowing. It’s bold, maybe too bold, but it’s his way of taking control. He has to be in control, and I guess his sexuality is one part of his life he has no control over.

“Well, I don’t know about you guys, but I think we should go out tonight?” Blake’s suggestion to go out tonight slices through the tension with the promise of an escape from the drama, even if only for a few hours. He scans the room, his tone light, hoping to lift the spirits.

“Yes! I agree. I have a dress I want to wear.” Dahlia’s playful smirk, laced with a hint of mischief, piques my curiosity about her plans for the evening. After her last plans, I'm on board; she doesn't even need to tell me her plan.

“Then get ready, Princess; I’ll take the dress off for you later,” Chase winks at her, a flirtatious quip that surprises me, given how much he avoids her. It’s hard to tell if he’s fully in the moment or if it’s a fleeting instance of bravado.

Dhalia practically skips away to get ready, her enthusiasm contagious. Blake follows suit, leaving me at the table with Chase. I start to clear up, reaching across the table to grab the cups, when Chase’s hand suddenly clasps mine, stopping me.

“Don’t do that,” he says softly, catching me off guard. I sit confused. “Avoid me. You do it every time. I might freak out and push you away afterwards, but then you hide for months.”

“Me?” I laugh. His accusation is incredulous. “I never hide!” In my mind, it’s always been him who retreats.

“No, Jax, it’s you. Notice how you reached over the table just now? Usually, you would walk around and use it as an excuse to touch me,” he points out with a knowing look.

I stand, puzzled, mulling over his words. Had I really been subconsciously keeping my distance? Now, looking back, I realise I have. I didn't realise, which meant I thought he was avoiding me after these arguments. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realise I did that.”
