Long ago, when Earth was dull and barren, Giants roamed the terrain in search of meaning. Born of magma and flame, they emerged from the crust of our planet to wake it from its eternal slumber and bring life to its lifeless land. 

They carried no names and they spoke no words as they walked in circles, blazing around the planet's circumference, with no end in sight. Millennia passed, and occasionally, the Earth giants would pass one another on their journeys, only to ignore each other's company. They found solitude in favor of conversation because finding answers was more important than community. They each had one shared goal in mind, and they were in a race against time to complete it, but it seemed as though none of them could solve their peculiar dilemma.

They did not need to eat, nor drink, nor sleep. They did not know what it was to be tired, lonely, or sad. They were told by the Universe herself that their purpose would be clear once they solved the puzzle that had forsaken them. They were promised it wasn't that difficult, but it seems as though the Universe lied. Still, they trusted in her guidance to lead their way, but they would sooner count all the stars in the sky than solve the riddle. 

Makhonjwa, the oldest of the Giants was beginning to give up on the quest. Having roamed for millions of years, she felt her legs begin to grow tired, a feeling she had never before recognized. She collapsed to the arid ground beneath her and wept. Salty streaks streamed down her limestone cheeks and began to fill the crevices left by the Giant's walking paths. Soon great rivers formed off the curves of her chest, and pools of life began to well. Genesis, unearthed. Greenery bloomed. Amoebas sprang into action and over time, they transformed into fish. Her tears kept rolling, for lifetimes upon lifetimes, and the Oceans themselves began to form. 

One by one, the Giants fell: Hamersley, Magaliesberg, Appalachia; all of them. They fell and they wept. They cried for eons and eons, until eventually, they became frozen in time. They themselves were the catalysts; the vessels of life. They were not meant to find the answer, they were meant to find themselves. 

Thus the Giants became what they were always meant to be: Mountains. Water was born from their fear and turned into love from their sacrifice.
