It had been nearly three years since I heard from Christopher. I cut all ties, friendships, and anyone that would tell me or invite me back into his world. He wanted me gone, and so I was gone.

My new life as a single woman was growing on me. Many of the men I met through the website and the dance clubs tried to draw me into a serious relationship, but I liked being free to do what I wanted when I wanted to do it.

I started growing a small garden in my backyard. It was hard finding plants that were strong enough to withstand the hot and humid Florida weather one day and a torrential downpour the very next.

The thing I liked most about my job was that I didn’t have to hustle and try to claw my way to the top. I was happy with my position. I had the freedom to work from home for weeks on end and then go into the office for a few days.

“Hey Denise,” Joel said as I came into the office and sat at what was now my desk.

My best friend Martha joked that I shouldn’t have slept with a white man. I told her she was mean, but she did point out that four of the men who couldn’t take no for an answer were white, and the other three were Hispanic. The black ones just found other white women to mess with.

Martha only dated or slept with black men. I was beginning to understand why.

I knew I shouldn’t have messed around with Joel. He worked for the same company, and that was something I usually didn’t do, but he was charming at the company dinner, and drinks flowed. I told him that night it would be a one-time thing, and it was precisely that, one-time.

“Rough day, huh?” my neighbor Gregg said as I walked toward my house.

Now, this was a tall, dark drink I would like to get into, but Gregg was a silent black man. I never heard loud music coming from his house, nor did he curse.

He worked downtown for a multimedia company. He was always dressed sharply, clean-cut, with a bald head and a body chiseled from black marble. I knew this because I had seen him in his backyard swimming pool.

“Yeah, I am going to take a shower then go into the pool,” he said.

‘Goddamn, I wish I was there for that,’ I thought as I looked at him.

“Maybe I should tear up my yard and get a pool,” I smiled.

“No, your garden is coming in nicely,” Gregg stopped just before he got to his door. “If you ever want to use mine, just ask.”

“You are just saying that,” I teased. ‘Please say you aren’t.’

“Okay I will keep that in mind,” I responded.

I didn’t ask that day mainly because I wanted to get a new swimsuit that would grab and hold Gregg’s eyes.

I found it online and had to wait for it to be delivered. I wasn’t built like the average big girl, so I loved it when they said they were big on top. I felt like saying, ‘Sweetie, you can order your size online, but I have to get mine custom made!’

They didn’t sell my bras in the regular stores, and I couldn’t go to Amazon or any other standard online store. Women in my breast department had to get clothes custom-made for most of our clothes.

The day was set, and I knocked on the door. I wore a garment over my swimsuit.

“Are you sure I am not imposing?” I asked.

His house was just like mine, but most of the houses in this development were cookie cutters, different paint for some, but mostly the same house.

I walked out onto the screened-in patio.

“Cleaned it yesterday,” Gregg said from behind me.

‘Damn!’ I thought as he dropped his robe.

He was wearing shorts, and his body was amazing.

I removed my garment and put it on one of the sun chairs.

I got the response I wanted. Gregg’s eyes went straight to my chest. ‘Wait until you see the back,’ I thought.

Gregg kept his distance as we talked and swam in his pool for a while, but after a few drinks, he was close to me. Staring at my cleavage, something that was hard to miss.
