Your Horoscope Written by ChatGPT

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a hot topic in the news recently, since the so-called godfather of AI, Geoffrey Hinton announced his resignation from Google. The prospect of AI doing jobs that are currently performed by people has been widely discussed on the mainstream news channels and social media.

Creatives, such as writers, musicians, artists and photographers are all acutely aware of the looming presence of this amazing technological development which, as powerful as it is, is still in its infancy. But just what can AI do that might threaten the livelihood of the everyday writer?

By way of experiment, I created a seer called Ivor Forsyte, astrologer to the stars, and I asked ChatGPT to write a horoscope for each of the star signs on his behalf. To begin with, I let AI write the copy entirely on its own, the prompt being simply write a positive 30 word horoscope for…. and then I inserted each star sign in turn.

To put my cards on the table vis-a-vis astrology, I believe the whole thing to be a load of nonsense (but that's typical of we Sagittarians, we're very skeptical). I have a relative who was once editor of a local newspaper, and his wife used to write the horoscopes, making them up off the top of her head at the kitchen table, so I've never taken the craft seriously. As you can see, the results are fairly bland and repetitive, and I'm sure my relative's wife could have made a better fist of things.

I made a second AI horoscope after this one, but this time requesting more specifics, for example, news of a birth, fruition of a long-term project, and a visit from someone from the past. I'll put those in another article, but for now, have a look at what's in store for you according to Ivor Forsyte.
