World War II was a global conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945 and involved the majority of the world's nations, including all of the great powers. It was the most widespread war in history, directly involving more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. The war saw significant technological advances, including the use of nuclear weapons, and resulted in the deaths of millions of people, including civilians. The causes of World War II were the aggressive actions of Nazi Germany, led by dictator Adolf Hitler, and the Axis powers in Europe, as well as Japan's expansionist policies in Asia. The war had a significant impact on world events and continues to shape international relations to this day.

During the period from 1939 to 1940, World War II was in its early stages. The war began on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, and Britain and France declared war in response. Germany quickly gained control of much of Western Europe, including Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. The evacuation of British and French troops from Dunkirk was a significant moment during this period, as it allowed a large number of Allied soldiers to escape capture by the Germans.

In the spring of 1940, Germany turned its attention to the Balkans and launched invasions of Yugoslavia and Greece. The Germans were also successful in their invasion of the Low Countries and France, forcing the French government to sign an armistice and effectively bringing an end to fighting on the Western Front.

During this time, the Battle of Britain was also taking place, as the German Luftwaffe attempted to gain air superiority over the Royal Air Force. While the Germans were ultimately unable to gain control of the skies, the battle was a significant moment in the war and a turning point for the Allies.

Overall, the period from 1939 to 1940 saw the rapid expansion of Nazi Germany and the Axis powers, as well as significant losses for the Allies. However, it also saw the beginning of resistance and pushback against the Axis powers, including the formation of the Free French forces and the beginning of the Lend-Lease program, in which the United States provided aid to the Allies.

During the period from 1940 to 1941, World War II continued to escalate, with the Axis powers making significant gains and the Allies facing significant losses.

In 1940, Italy entered the war on the side of Germany and the Axis powers, launching invasions of British-held territories in Africa and the Balkans. The Italians were initially successful in these campaigns, but their fortunes began to turn as the war progressed and they faced defeats at the hands of the British and their allies.

In 1941, Germany launched a major invasion of the Soviet Union, which was the largest and deadliest campaign of the war. The Germans made rapid gains at first, but the Soviet Union's vast territory, harsh winter climate, and determination to defend their homeland ultimately proved to be formidable obstacles.

The United States, which had initially remained neutral in the war, was drawn into the conflict in December 1941 following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The United States declared war on Japan and, subsequently, Germany and the other Axis powers.

Overall, the period from 1940 to 1941 saw the Axis powers making significant gains, but also facing increasing resistance and setbacks as the war continued. The entry of the United States into the conflict marked a turning point and marked the beginning of a shift in favor of the Allies.
