Since 2020, its price has increased more than tenfold, making it the most expensive metal used in batteries—far more costly than materials like nickel, cobalt, and magnesium.

Experts predict that global demand for lithium will grow exponentially by 2050, with needs more than ten times higher than today. This could represent a radical shift for the industry, particularly in transportation and energy storage. This is where Thacker Pass comes into play.

Nevada's Crucial Role in the Energy Transition

Nevada could position itself as the epicenter of this global energy revolution. The United States, aiming to reduce pollution by 50% by 2030, is counting on lithium to replace gasoline-powered vehicles with electric ones. But for this to become a reality, the country will need to significantly increase its lithium production.

Currently, the U.S. imports most of its lithium from countries like Chile and Argentina. If Nevada wants to become a global leader in this industry, it will need to invest heavily in projects like Thacker Pass. However, extracting lithium from this mine is one thing; refining it is another.

Refining Lithium: A Global Challenge

Lithium extracted from mines is not directly usable in batteries. It must undergo a meticulous refining process to become a pure raw material ready for use. This process is a specialty of China, which currently controls about 75% of the global lithium-ion battery production market.

This means that even if the U.S. finds significant lithium reserves on its soil, it will likely depend on China to refine it and turn it into batteries. The challenge for the U.S. is to strengthen its supply chain and invest in domestic refining technologies to avoid relying on Chinese imports. If estimates are correct, the McDermitt Caldera could hold nearly half of the world's known lithium reserves—a figure rivaling Bolivia's Salars, which previously held the record for the largest lithium reserve.

This means that lithium extraction at Thacker Pass could redefine global power dynamics. High-tech companies, automakers, and energy giants are already competing to take control of this mine.

Intense Competition for Thacker Pass Lithium

Three major companies already have their eyes on Thacker Pass. ExxonMobil, the oil giant, plans to begin lithium production by 2027, with the ambition of becoming the leading supplier of batteries for electric vehicles by 2030. Then there's General Motors, which recently paid $625 million for a 38% stake in the Thacker Pass project. Finally, Tesla, the pioneer of electric vehicles, has also started investing in lithium processing plants, strengthening its own supply network.

These giants are in a race to secure their lithium supply, a metal that has become indispensable to their future. But one question remains: What happens if this mine doesn't produce enough lithium or if extraction encounters technical obstacles?

Environmental and Social Challenges of Extraction

Thacker Pass could transform the region, but not without risks. Large-scale lithium extraction could have significant environmental impacts, particularly in terms of water resource management and pollution. It is also likely that the local population, once tranquil, will have to adapt to the arrival of thousands of workers from other regions.
