He is feared by a lot of people and due to this gets a negative image. In reality however, Lord Shani is one of the most neutral Gods there can be. He is the God of Justice, of helping people get what they rightfully deserve for all their deeds with no place for bias. It is rightly said that in His court, there is only fairness. In this blog, we discuss the story of the Lord of Justice and the power of His grace.
The Mysterious Birth
Physically, the planet Saturn represents Lord Shani. While there are many stories that are associate with His birth, here’s our favorite-
Sun god or Surya Dev, married Sandhya who was a very beautiful, faithful and devoted wife. Sandhya in Sanskrit or Hindi means evening. One can also relate this to the sunsets in the evenings.
Being married to Lord Sun, Sandhya had to always bear the unbearable scorching heat and when she couldn’t take it anymore, she created her replica, Chhaya and left for penance in the woods. Chhaya means shadow. Chhaya was to serve and care for Lord Sun and Sandhya and His children.
During the time Chhaya was serving, and this is to be noted here that she was doing it with the Sun Lord’s knowledge, they had three more kids.
Chhaya, was not only an ardent devotee of Lord Sun, but she was also a huge devotee of Lord Shiva. As a result, when she was carrying Lord Shani in her womb, He became a devotee of Lord Shiva as well.
Due to Chhaya’s devotion towards Lord Sun, some of His heat was passed on and when Lord Shani was born, He looked pitch black. Looking at this, Lord Sun was shocked and what’s more, one look at His own child and Sun went into eclipse. Considering it a bad omen, Lord Surya even doubted if Lord Shani was His own son.
Naturally, since the Lord of light couldn’t have birthed such a dark child.
This is when Lord Shiva appeared and explained to Lord Surya what had exactly happened, leading to an understanding between Lord Surya and Lord Shani. The Divine Task
Lord Shani's birth and unique appearance did not only cause astonishment but also set the stage for the divine task he was destined to perform. As the embodiment of justice, Lord Shani was assigned the responsibility of delivering the consequences of individuals' actions. His impartial gaze would scrutinize every deed, ensuring that everyone received their due, irrespective of their status or influence. Unlike the common perception of Him as a harbinger of misfortune, Lord Shani's role was to maintain the cosmic balance and uphold righteousness.
The Sade Sati Period
Lord Shani's influence is often associated with the challenging astrological phase known as Sade Sati, a period when Saturn transits through the twelfth, first, and second houses of one's horoscope. Despite the apprehension and fear surrounding Sade Sati, it is crucial to understand its significance. This phase, rather than being a malevolent force, serves as a mechanism for karmic accountability. It is believed that during Sade Sati, individuals reap the results of their past actions, and by facing challenges, they have an opportunity for spiritual growth and self-reflection.
The Lessons of Patience
Lord Shani's impact on an individual's life is often considered a test of patience and resilience. While the challenges posed by his influence may seem daunting, they are meant to teach valuable lessons about perseverance and inner strength. Devotees believe that navigating through the trials imposed by Lord Shani with patience and a virtuous mindset can lead to personal growth and a positive transformation of one's destiny.
Seeking Lord Shani's Blessings
Despite his stern image, Lord Shani is also considered a benevolent deity who bestows blessings upon those who approach Him with sincerity and humility. Devotees often engage in prayers, rituals, and acts of charity to appease Lord Shani and seek his divine protection. Understanding the true nature of Lord Shani as the dispenser of justice encourages individuals to embrace the challenges in their lives with a sense of accountability and a commitment to righteousness. In essence, Lord Shani's story and influence encapsulate the profound philosophy of cosmic justice and the inextricable link between actions and their consequences. Beyond the common perception of fear associated with His name, delving into the narrative reveals a deity committed to maintaining equilibrium in the universe. Embracing the teachings of Lord Shani involves acknowledging the interconnectedness of one's deeds with their life's trajectory, fostering a sense of responsibility for one's actions. By understanding and respecting the principles of justice personified in Lord Shani, individuals can navigate life's challenges with resilience, humility, and a steadfast commitment to righteousness, thereby aligning themselves with the divine order that governs the cosmos.
