Is Portgas D. Ace Still Alive in One Piece? Luffy's Brother!
Anime!

To One Piece fans, the character of Portgas D. Ace fills a special spot in their hearts. Being Monkey D. Luffy's elder brother, Ace symbolizes cameraderie, strength, and the anguishing price to be paid for pursuing a dream. His sad death at the hands of Akainu during the Marineford War remains a moment of unprecedented sadness in the series, dealing serious blows to the characters within the One Piece world and fans across the globe. But for years, the insinuation that Ace might return or survive had doggedly hung around. Well, is it somehow possible that Ace is still alive or that he may come back in some manner?

Ace's Influence and Sacrifice The late Portgas D. Ace was the older brother of Luffy and Sabo and is quite significant in the life of Luffy as he taught him values and set a role model of strength and being independent. His death during the Marineford Arc is considered one of the most touching moments of One Piece: when Ace sacrificed himself for Luffy against Admiral Akainu. It was the moment which would change the series forever, epitomizing the results of the journey of the Straw Hats and just how fragile Luffy was. In that case, with regard to the fans, Ace's death made them see that in One Piece, danger could lurk anywhere, and the most-cherished may not necessarily make it.
Noble as his sacrifice was, since then, many have relished the prospect of his survival or return.
While One Piece balances most of its moments between pure humor and light-hearted adventure, its author Eiichiro Oda does not hesitate to delve deep into dark, painful themes. Thus, Ace's death served as a very important lesson to Luffy. It stirred him to become stronger and face the challenges of the New World, but even then, one wonders if Ace could ever return in some sort of form-manga and anime allowing such eventualities through creative plot devices.
Theories about Ace's possible return
Although Ace's death was confirmed in the series, some characters of One Piece have returned in special kinds of ways. Oda is prone to creating complex storylines, sometimes with character comebacks nobody expects. For example, the sakura blossoms of Dr. Hiriluk bloomed a very long while later as a sign of him leaving behind an indelible mark. Ace too could "come back" in some manner that remembers him rather than literally resurrecting him.
Flashbacks and Lost Memories: Most characters who are dead but dear to the audience usually return for flashbacks, which tell much about their life. We have already witnessed Ace coming back for some flashbacks that showed glimpses of his past, his connection with Whitebeard, and his love for Luffy. The flashback gives Oda latitude to keep Ace present without having to change too much in storylines.
Haki or Spiritual Appearance: Haki can come in many forms in One Piece. Some believe that Ace will come back as a spirit guide to Luffy during important crisis moments in his life and not resurrect. It will be symbolic of their reunion and make Luffy feel strong.
Legacy through Sabo: Well, Sabo has already picked up Ace's will by going ahead to inherit his Devil Fruit, Mera Mera no Mi. In a way, Sabo carries Ace's "flame," allowing us to see a version of Ace's power live on. The "will of D" concept is pretty crucial in One Piece; it speaks about wills leaving the person who originally has it and living in other people, such as Sabo here, who continues Ace's legacy. Why Bringing Ace Back Lessens the Story
While fans want to see Ace alive, such development would deny the gravity of his sacrifice. One Piece does an outstanding job in setting up the stakes and consequences, and Ace's death marked an emotional shifting point-it was to show to Luffy that the sad reality was that he isn't invincible, and people close to him could be taken away. Were he to return in such a case, the lesson would have really become quite meaningless. Luffy's growth since Marineford relies on the pain of losing Ace: his commitment to becoming stronger and protecting his friends flows from that experience.
Honoring Ace's Legacy Eiichiro Oda always showed respect to the characters which were part of the story, especially those that changed it at an instance. As much as the physical return of Ace is improbable, his presence in the storyline of One Piece is far from over. Whether through flashbacks, spiritual moments, or even Sabo continuing his will, Ace remains a huge part of the world in One Piece. His memory still continues to trigger Luffy and the fans also, reminding them of the bonds that make them and define them. To One Piece fans, Ace's spirit will always live on. His bravery, loyalty, and love for family have made him immortal, and at least on occasion, this fact drives the point home that no matter how a character's physical body dies, his legacy cannot be taken away. While Ace will have no real return to flesh and blood, his impact on events and on Luffy's journey itself will be indestructible-a never-ending testament to brotherly ties in One Piece.
