GTA 6 Pre-Load Available Now, Has a Tiny File Size
Good luck trying to play it though

Some sharp-eyed fans recently noticed something odd: Grand Theft Auto VI is now showing up as available to download—sort of. With the release still nearly 10 months away, it caught a lot of people off guard. But here’s the thing: while this might look like a surprise early pre-load, the reality is a bit more mundane.
So… Is GTA VI Actually Downloadable?
The short answer: not really.
A Reddit user back in June posted a screenshot showing that they were able to “download” GTA VI through the Xbox Store. What they got, however, wasn’t the full game. It was a 328.8MB placeholder file—and no, that’s not a typo.
In the context of a modern AAA game (especially one as enormous as GTA VI is expected to be), a 328MB download is practically nothing. You can barely fit a few cutscenes in that amount of space, let alone the sprawling world Rockstar has promised.
What’s Actually Going On?
This isn’t a secret beta or an early access situation. It’s just how Xbox’s smart delivery and pre-load system works now.

Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes: when you hit “download” on a game that’s still months from release, Xbox lets you grab a placeholder file. This file doesn’t contain the game itself—it’s just a trigger. When the game officially goes live for pre-load (typically a few days before release), your system will automatically begin downloading the full version.
Basically, you’re planting a flag for future installation.
So, if you download that file now, your Xbox will know you want GTA VI and will start pulling down the actual game once Rockstar flips the switch.
Should You Bother Downloading It?
Honestly? Probably not. Unless you just like seeing the GTA VI logo in your games library, there’s no practical reason to grab the 328MB file yet. It won’t give you any exclusive access, sneak peeks, or early notifications.
It’s just sitting there, taking up space on your drive. And with modern game sizes being what they are—easily hitting 100GB or more—you may want to hold off until Rockstar announces actual pre-load dates and file sizes.
Instead, set yourself a reminder for mid-May 2026, maybe a week or two before launch. That’s when pre-loads typically open up, and you’ll be able to grab the real deal without any guesswork.
What This Does Tell Us About the Game
Still, there is one interesting takeaway. The fact that this placeholder file exists at all suggests that Rockstar and Microsoft have already started wiring things up in the backend. The listing, the file, the infrastructure—it’s all being quietly prepped. So, even though we’re not getting new trailers or announcements every week, the machine is turning.
That lines up with Rockstar’s style. They’ve never been big on constant updates or oversharing. They drop one or two huge trailers, go dark, and then deliver. So far, we’ve seen one trailer (released in December 2023), and since then? Radio silence. It’s frustrating for fans, but it’s also classic Rockstar.
What We Know About the Release
GTA VI is officially set to release on May 26, 2026, for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. No word yet on a PC release, which—based on Rockstar’s history—will probably come later.
Expect a second trailer sometime in late 2025 or early 2026, possibly with gameplay reveals and more details about the story, characters, and massive open world that’s reportedly set in a modernized Vice City.
Until then, if you see “GTA VI” in your Xbox library, just know it’s a digital paperweight—for now.
