The Google Pixel 6 rolls out to the world with Android 12, the latest software update from Google for Android phones. Google Pixel phones have been our favorite Android phones at WIRED for several years now. Google's Pixel phones feature industry-leading cameras, receive software and security updates directly from Google (just like Apple's iPhones), and are competitively priced. Following a line of pure Android devices, Pixel phones support fast charging via the USB Type C port. They also include unlimited Google Photos cloud storage, 24/7 phone or chat support, Google Virtual Assistant (see Google Assistant), a state-of-the-art 4K camera with laser focus and virtual reality (see Daydream VR).

The first-generation Pixel smartphones also included unlimited cloud storage for images in Google Photos [3], and an unlockable bootloader for devices purchased directly from Google. The Google Pixel line offers the cleanest version of Google's Android operating system, a high-end camera, and is generally smaller and easier to use than the competition. As tempting as the Google Pixel 6, for $300 more, you can upgrade to the more premium Pixel 6 Pro, which adds a telephoto lens; a 6.7-inch curved display with higher resolution and higher refresh rate; more Multiple memory; Ultra Wideband chip on the back and Gorilla Glass Victus. It's $200 cheaper than the iPhone, and as part of the deal, Google added a pair of Pixel Buds (Series A) headphones.

The Google Pixel 3 is one of the oldest phones on this list, so you might be able to get it at a discount compared to the original price, but it may not last as long and it has a bit of dated hardware compared to others on this list. Of course, the Google Pixel 4 XL is a bit behind in some respects: its chipset was a little dated even at the time of release, its battery is pretty small, and it doesn't have as much storage as some phones. The new Google Pixel 6 cameras, Google Tensor chip, and premium ambitions follow months of hype, stemming in part from Google's announcement of the phone months before its release and its bold two-tone design. However, among the new features introduced by both Tensor and Android 12, the Google Pixel 6 is definitely a contender to be your next phone.

The Pixel 6 doesn't work with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chip found in almost every other flagship Android phone like the Galaxy S21 and OnePlus 9 Pro. The Galaxy S21 also has one of the fastest processors available and four years of guaranteed updates. Android software is not as good as Google's. While Samsung's Android software can be clunky and confusing compared to Google's Pixel-optimized version, Samsung promises four years of updates (a year more than Google offers). Pixel phones have received Android version updates for at least 3 years since the device first became available on the Google Store.

With the Pixel 6, Google guarantees that Android version updates will be available until at least October 2024 (three years after the hardware ships), and security updates will be available for at least five years, until October 2026. It's not the same as Android Software Updates, where it looks like you'll get three anyway, but it's a step up to the long-term support that the iPhone 13s offers its iPhones, meaning you'll be able to use the Google Pixel 6 longer. the question now is whether this bypass will be followed by yet another attempt at a platform-wide extension like the Google Now Launcher, or whether it will remain a Pixel exclusive and only available to those of us who carry standalone Google Android devices. The Google Pixel 3a introduced the concept of Pixel phones to phone enthusiasts, with stripped-down features and missing specs, but the same pure Android software and impressive camera capabilities.

Now, a new analysis of Google's software development reveals that the Googley Pixel widget is poised to receive a major update that will make it almost familiar to anyone who pays attention to it. Google Pixel phones didn't exist yet; rather, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus was the flagship of Android that summer, while the LG-born Nexus 4 was emerging from the virtual womb and being born into the world. Google's introduction of two new Pixel phones in mid-October was the perfect reason to come back. Picking a Google phone hasn't been hard in the past few years, but the latest lineup is different.

Google announced the first generation of the Pixel, Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones on October 4, 2016 during the #MadeByGoogle event. We've already heard from insider Max Jambore that the much less controversial Pixel 6a could launch in May, around the time of Google I/O, so it's possible that all this new hardware will arrive just in time for the summer.

The Google Pixel 4a also offers better camera performance than phones that cost three times as much. The features have been updated to include some more modern elements, like everything tech-related, and it's in a slightly different skin that fits more naturally into the current Google Pixel interface, but on the surface, hell, it is. a subtle mix of proactive and contextual information from many different Google-related sources.
