Today, the National Citizen Party (NCP)'s chief organizer for the southern region, Hasnat Abdullah, has announced large gatherings calling for the Awami League and its affiliated organizations to be banned. The fresh programme will be held across the country at all points of July uprising spots, where people protested last July demanding the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The programme will be held centrally at the Shahbagh intersection at around 3:00pm today.
Key Details of the Programme:
Nationwide Protests: Simultaneous rallies are planned at various locations termed "July Points," which were significant during last year's July–August uprising against the AL regime. Three Core Demands:
Declaration of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies as terrorist organizations and their subsequent ban. Amendments to the International Crimes Tribunal Act to facilitate the trial of political parties like the AL. Issuance of a formal "July Declaration."
Participants: The movement calls upon victims of alleged torture, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings during the AL's tenure, as well as families of those killed, to join the protests. Various political and student organizations, including Islamic Chhatra Shibir, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, and the Amar Bangladesh Party, have expressed solidarity with the movement.
Ongoing Sit-in: Protesters have been staging a sit-in at Shahbagh since Thursday evening, with the demonstration continuing into Saturday. Law enforcement agencies, including police and army personnel, have been deployed in the area to maintain order.
These developments indicate a significant escalation in political activism and public demonstrations in Dhaka and across Bangladesh. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and participants are advised to stay informed about any updates or changes to the planned events.
Hasnat appealed to all victims of the Awami League regime's 15 and a half years of torture and forcible disappearance. He also urged the families of victims who were killed during this time to join the protests. Hasnat said, "We are announcing a mass gathering for tomorrow around 3:00pm in Shahbagh. This gathering will be held with the participation of everyone. It will take place at every point in the country where blockades were carried out during the July uprising."
Mentioning three demands, Hasnat said, "The movement will continue until the Awami League is banned. Our three demands are -- the July declaration must be issued, the Awami League must be declared a terrorist organization and banned along
