Ever heard of Authentiflex Leadership?
You have now.

Leadership really isn’t about clinging to a single style, or trying to be everything to everyone. Success comes from knowing who you are, and knowing how and when to flex.
This is where Authentiflex Leadership comes in.
It’s a leadership approach which I’ve developed and used in real-world, high-pressure situations. It blends authenticity with flexibility, so you stay rooted in your values, even as you adapt your style to suit the moment, the people, and the challenge.
Sound idealistic? It’s really not. It’s thoroughly practical, human, and frankly… essential.
So, What exactly is Authentiflex Leadership?
At its core, Authentiflex Leadership is the ability to lead with integrity and consistency, whilst shifting your style and leadership approach to meet changing circumstances and individual needs. It’s knowing when to listen, and when to decide. When to guide gently and when to take the wheel firmly.
I coined the term following one of the most challenging leadership moments that I’ve faced, a full-blown disaster recovery after a serious workplace fire. My team were highly experienced, very capable, and used to working autonomously and collaboratively. But in that crisis, I had to dramatically change our way of working overnight. During a crisis, a collaborative approach can cause delays and increase anxiety. Teams can suffer from decision paralysis in high pressure moments, as the brain shifts into survival mode. Stress hormones surge making it more difficult to think clearly.
Suddenly, we were meeting early every morning to set daily goals, assigning specific tasks, and checking in regularly. That wasn’t just for progress updates, but for everyone’s welfare. The team were having to work in difficult and uncomfortable conditions, after all, it’s pretty unusual for an IT team to need hard hats, protective shoes, gloves and heavy duty face masks. We flexed, but we never lost our sense of purpose or trust. Importantly, everyone understood why my approach had changed, and appreciated that this was both necessary and temporary. The outcome? A team that didn’t just cope, they rose to the challenge and truly excelled.
That’s the power of Authentiflex leadership in a crisis.
It is equally powerful when dealing with many other scenarios, particularly those that involve leading change, or the development of people.
The HEART of Authentiflex Leadership
While styles may flex, values must remain rock-solid. For me, it comes down to five non-negotiable principles—the beating HEART of an Authentiflex leader:
Honesty – Say what you mean, own your truth, and keep things transparent.
Empathy – Understand your team, their pressures, and their perspectives. Appreciate that they are real people with feelings.
Authenticity – Lead in a way that feels real, not rehearsed.
Respect – Show up with curiosity, kindness, and a willingness to listen.
Trust – Build it. Protect it. Never take it for granted.
These values anchor your leadership, no matter how much you need to adapt.
Want to go deeper? I also see Integrity as the force that protects these values under pressure, and Vision as the map that guides them towards meaningful outcomes.
Flexing Your Style: The Authentiflex Scale
Imagine a scale—from Directive to Collaborative.

On one end, you’re setting out the plan and making fast, firm decisions.
On the other, you’re listening, co-creating, and giving space for others to shine.
Authentiflex leadership means knowing where to sit on that scale at any point, and when to flex more to one side than the other.
- In a crisis? You may need to lean into clarity and control.
- When nurturing growth? It might be time to step back and empower others.
The key is intentionality. It’s not about playing a role, it’s about bringing your whole self to the leadership table and responding to what your team and context genuinely need.
Leadership Legacy Begins with You
In the end, leadership isn’t just about results, it’s about your impact. It’s about the culture that you shape, the people that you elevate, and the values which you model along the way.
Authentiflex leaders aren’t swayed by the latest fads or fleeting opinions. They stand firm, their impact measured not in moments, but in legacies. They leave behind trust, belief, and progress. Hopefully, they leave each place they work, and each team they lead better than than they were when they started.
