Easy Agar Powder Boba recipe

Water based Boba pearls

Boba is a very popular dish these days, and, luckily, very simple to make!

It was first originated in Taiwan, and is most commonly a sweet beverage with small dark pearls.

Boba can come in various varieties though, and the different flavors are endless.

In this recipe, however, the Boba pearls will not have the traditional dark brown color. Luckily, you will still have many different flavors to choose from, in fact, you can even use water!

This recipe also uses Agar Agar Powder (Can be found online), and is a great option for people with food restrictions like High Histamine Response or Allergies.

Now with that aside, let’s make some Boba.

1 serving:

Ingredients:

3/4 cup of liquid (Water or fruit juice)

2 milliliters or 2 grams of Agar Agar Powder

1 cup of vegetable or olive oil (Will be used to make the shape, not to be eaten)

Tools:

Small sauce pan

Liquid Measuring equipment

Dropper

Instructions:

Part one:

1. Pour vegetable or olive oil into a thin, tall cup (Use a clear cup to see observe how the pearls are formed)

2. Put cup of oil in freezer

Part two:

1. Pour 3/4 cup liquid of your choice and Agar Powder in small sauce pan.

2. Stir the mix quickly (This helps the Agar Powder dissolve)

3. Place the stovetop temperature on high for 6 minutes (More or less depending on your stovetop)

4. After the 6 minutes have past, lower stovetop temp to low for 10 minutes. (If the mix is not boiled yet, turn stove temp to medium for 5 minutes)

Part three:

1. Take out the cup of oil you put in the freezer earlier, and place on counter. The oil should be cold.

2. Take your Dropper and suck up the mix of Agar Powder and liquid.

3. Pour the drops of the mix slowly into cold oil. Keep repeating until you finished your Agar Powder and liquid mix.

4. Put cup of mix drops and oil into refrigerator (Not freezer this time) for 20 minutes

5. Take out cup of mix and oil out of the fridge and, Voilá! You should have small pearls!

6. Rinse off oil.

7. Serve with honey, sugar, or other toppings. You can also put the pearls into drinks.

Tips:

The ones in the photo were clear because I used water instead of juice. If you do this, pour some honey or other sweetener on them if you serve raw.

2 grams of Agar Powder may seem like way too little, but it is the perfect amount. It expands in the water.

Also, you can try to use Date Syrup in your mix to give it the traditional color, but I haven’t tried it yet. Let me know if you do!

This recipe is a bit tricky to master, so don’t stress if it doesn’t come out right the first time! The pearls may also melt into each other, so keep them small.

Boba Fun Facts:

Boba has been around since the 80’s!

The most common Boba Pearls are made from Tapicoa! Thats from Cassava Roots.

Boba is slang for a unexpected word in Taiwan…
