Brooks Ghost Max 2 Review My Real Experience
My Real Experience

Choosing a daily running shoe has become more complicated than it needs to be. Every brand releases a “max” version, a “neutral” version, a “soft foam” version, and a “stability-lite” version. It’s a lot. That’s why I liked the first Ghost Max so much it felt simple and modern without trying too hard. So when Brooks released the Ghost Max 2, I went into it hoping they hadn’t messed with something that already worked.
I spent time walking, casual running, and testing it on cold-weather routes to see how it performs as an everyday trainer. Here’s exactly what happened, and whether this shoe is worth your money.
My Experience With the Brooks Ghost Max 2
The first thing I noticed when I unboxed the Ghost Max 2 was how familiar it looked thick midsole, wide base, and that smooth rocker shape. But it also felt slightly different in hand. Firmer. More structured. Less “pillowy” compared to the original Ghost Max.
Once I got it on foot, the extra padding in the heel and tongue stood out immediately. It feels soft and plush around the ankle maybe more than I personally prefer but now that I’m running in colder temperatures, the added warmth isn’t a bad thing. In summer, though, I can see this being a heat trap.
During the first few runs, the shoe felt stable and predictable, almost like it was designed for people who want support without using traditional stability features. The wide platform makes every landing steady, especially on days when your stride isn’t perfect. It never felt wobbly or uncertain.
But compared to the first Ghost Max, the ride is noticeably firmer. Version 1 had a more modern “max cushion” feel with softer compression underfoot. Version 2, with the new DNA Loft v3 foam, feels more controlled and slightly stiffer. Not uncomfortable just less exciting.
If I had to describe the ride in one sentence:
Solid, steady, and comfortable, but not as enjoyable as the first version.
For someone who prefers firm daily trainers, this might be an improvement. For me, it felt like a small step backward.
Features Explained in Simple Terms
1. Thick Midsole (39 mm Heel / 33 mm Forefoot)
There’s plenty of foam under the foot, and the 6 mm drop gives a nice smooth roll forward. The rocker helps guide each step, especially on longer easy runs.
2. GlideRoll Geometry
That long line running around the midsole isn’t just design it’s part functional. It helps the shoe roll more smoothly and prevents the midsole from compressing unevenly when you land.
3. Extra-Wide Base
This is one of the best parts of the shoe. A wide landing area makes every step feel stable, especially when you’re tired or your form isn’t perfect.
4. Breathable but Heavily Padded Upper
The upper feels nice and comfortable, but the padding is a lot. Great for winter. Not ideal for summer.
5. Outsole Rubber
Good coverage without feeling heavy. Brooks didn’t overdo it like they sometimes do with the standard Ghost.
6. Removable Insole
Yes, it comes out easily if you use custom orthotics.
7. Weight: 10.8 oz (306 g)
A bit heavier than some daily trainers in 2025, but not enough to be a deal-breaker.
How It Feels on the Road
After several miles, the shoe consistently gave me one thing: predictability.
No surprises. No instability. No weird pressure points. Just a smooth, controlled ride.
But if you loved the soft, modern cushioning of the original Ghost Max, you’ll feel the difference. Ghost Max 2 leans slightly toward the regular Ghost now — more traditional, more firm, and less “max cushion” than the name suggests.
When I compared my notes from version 1 and version 2, I kept coming back to the same thought:
Brooks added things I didn’t ask for and stiffened things I wish they’d left alone.
It’s still a very good shoe but the original felt more special.

Pros and Cons
What I Liked
- Stable and predictable on every landing
- Wide platform makes it great for walkers and casual runners
- Rocker shape helps you move forward easily
- Comfortable padding around the foot
- Removable insole
- Good for long easy days
- Works as both a running shoe and daily wear shoe
What I Didn’t Like
- Firmer than last year’s version
- More stiff sidewalls
- Upper padding feels too much for warm weather
- Not as “max cushion” as the name suggests
- Slightly heavier than ideal
Who Should Buy the Brooks Ghost Max 2
Choose this shoe if:
- You want a stable daily trainer without traditional stability features
- You walk + run in the same shoe
- You prefer a firmer, more structured ride
- You want a wide base for confident landings
- You like predictability rather than soft, bouncy foam
Skip it if:
- You want something soft and ultra-cushioned
- You loved the Ghost Max 1 for its plush feel
- You run in hot climates and hate heavy padding
- You want a lively or fast-feeling shoe
If you do want softer, taller, and more fun cushioning, Glycerin Max is a much better option from Brooks. Brooks Ghost Max 2: Is this your next choice?
Conclusion
The Brooks Ghost Max 2 is still a strong, reliable, modern daily trainer, but it loses some of the magic that made the first version stand out. The ride is controlled and steady, but the firmer foam and extra structure make it feel closer to the traditional Ghost than I expected.
Is it worth buying?
Yes if you want a stable, predictable shoe that you can use for walking, daily use, and easy running.
No if you loved the softer feel of the original Ghost Max.
If you can still find the Ghost Max 1 at a discount, that’s the better buy.
Either way, the Ghost Max 2 is a solid choice in the Brooks lineup just not the big progression I hoped for.
